You have too been watching MTV's Newlyweds. Don't front! With their careers as pop stars on shaky ground, hunky 98 Degrees dude Nick Lachey and 'dumb blonde' Jessica Simpson signed on for a reality TV show about their marriage. Some grumps called this a desperate grab for publicity. Well, maybe so, but Newlyweds is the second-highest rated cable show after Sex and the City. And it's just been renewed by MTV for a second season. Joe Simpson — Jessica's dad, personal manager and executive producer — is one proud papa. Even if the show's portrayal of his sloppy, doofy, primadonna daughter isn't very flattering.

'What's happening here is Jessica knows she's on camera,' he insists to TV Guide Online. 'Since she was a little girl, people have been calling her a dumb blonde, [so] she begins to assume the role that everybody expects of her. That doesn't mean that's who she is. It's a part of her personality, but it's one that she's enhancing on the show. It's nothing that's not real, but she unintentionally exaggerates.'

Uh huh. While clearly biased, Joe denies Jessica's TV antics are spoiling her image for fans. Instead, he generously compares her comedic talent to Lucille Ball's. He also thinks her imperfections are boosting her likeability (and album sales). 'We did the show because everybody had seen Jessica as only a Barbie doll, because she does have beauty that separates her from the average person. She has a six octave range, so she also has a voice that not everybody [has]. So a lot of America didn't relate to her. We did this show so that people would see that, hey, she's just a normal kid.'

Perhaps, but she sure is a pampered kid, accustomed to maid service and having her own way about things! Watching Nick scold Jessie for her slovenly ways is a guilty pleasure. 'She'll never like cleaning,' Joe admits. 'Jessica always had someone else to do that, so she didn't have to. And she didn't go away to college — which is the first place kids begin to take responsibility — because she was on the road [singing]. It is so funny!

To be honest, I think its exaggerated. I think she knows shes going to get more attention like that. And guess what...she does! So many people are watching this show..I think even more so to see the spoiled, 'dumb' blonde routine which turns it into comedy.

I really like her since this and to be honest, even if she is that dumb, at least shes being real.

It's like you can't turn it off it is so funny. I saw the re-run today & in 5 minutes she tried to get into someone else's hotel room (forgot her room number), complained b/c 15 people showed up for her book signing and b@tched non-stop after Nick worked his ass off for 3 days fixing up the house.

As for exaggerating it...even if she was, why? Half the nation is laughing at her for her idiocracy. The thing about Lucille Ball is that on 'I love Lucy' she was comical but in real life she wasn't! And Lucille had already been in other roles in movies and the public already knew her and knew while she was a comic, she wasn't stupid!

if she wasn't so stupid, i wouldn't watch the show. its my guilty pleasure. i love watching her make an a$$ of herself! its so hysterical! & i sit there screaming at the TV because she's so dumb!!
so whether she's truly that dumb or she's exaggerating, lots of people are watching!

I think she's just dumb! Did anyone see the episode where she was offered Buffalo wings and she declined and said she doen't eat Buffalo!!!!!!!! That should answer all of your questions!

I guess her parents should be proud that they raised a SLOB who cannot seem to pick up a towel! I am not talking about scrubbing baseboards here. I am saying just because you have a cleaning person does NOT mean you should not be able to care for yourself in some basic ways.
Also, I find her annoying- not funny and certainly NO Lucille Ball. Lucille Ball did not walk around Hollywood screaming and crying for Ricky and trying to get out of trouble with her friend Ethal...that was a scripted TV show, this show is not scripted.
If Jessica cannot allow the public to see the 'real' her than that is her problem and just proves how swallow she is. I think it is VERY sad...plus the Soprano's are not on right now or else this would NOT be the 2nd rated Cable show.

i love the show too - and i think they are both equally moronic! no intelligent person i know would be able to take her for more than 1 week.....she's not THAT pretty!!!

i find it a little sad that her father would speak like that about his own daughter.....i think it gives a real clear indication why she acts that way though!!

I think that exaggerated or not....I think she made a very bad career move by acting the way she does on TV. She should have stuck to just singing!

I must admit, I really enjoy the show . I feel it's somewhat exaggerrated, but who really knows. All I know is that it is my guilty pleasure too
