Is the groom's cake for the RD or the wedding reception?

I'm a bit confused.

I thought it was supposed to be for the rehearsal dinner???

I think you can do either

We are doing to Groom's cake at the RD - also because the cake is small - so it won't feed hundreds and it will be informal.

It began as a southern tradition where the cake would be at the wedding. Nowadays, and in this area, it's usually seen (if at all) at the RD.

You can do it either way. If I do one (very doubtful), it'll be at the RD.

Is the groom's cake supposed to be a surprise (whether it's at the RD or at the reception)?

If it were at the reception, would it be on a separate table next to the wedding cake the entire time or would it be brought out later?

It doesn't have to be a surprise unless you want it to be.

My groom's cake will be a suprise - He really wants a BMW but we are going to wait until we buy our house to purchase one. So I am going to borrow a spare key from a friend and put it in a box - When he opens it at the rehearsal dinner - I am going to have them roll in the cake

If I do one, it will be for the rehearsal dinner. I think I might keep it a surprise from FH.

Wait, but will he think you bought him a BMW by mistake? (Since he'll see a key!). I wouldn't want him to be disappointed!

I did it at the Wedding. I wanted DH to be surprised and to be in the spot light. He loved it and was so surprised I had done it for him. He loves his BMW! Pics in album.

My MOH is trying to talk me out of this idea because FH might not find it funny - but I will work it out very soon

I had my DJ make an announcement something like 'Nick, your new wife wanted to surprise you with something just for you, etc.' All eyes were on him. It was great!

Found this:

While the wedding cake or bride’s cake was eaten at the wedding reception, the groom's cake, which was usually a fruitcake, was taken home as a wedding favor (thinly sliced pieces in personalized bags or boxes) for the unmarried female guests to put under their pillows. Supposedly, the women would dream of their future husbands.
