Is the Unity candle a tradition now?

I haven't seen it done much... Of course last wedding I went to was in 1999. I have 6 this year including my own! LOL WOW

But I would love to know who had it.. and when it's done in the ceremony, etc... Thanks!

now, don't quote me on this but I have only seen the unity candle thing done
in Christian ceremonies. I have never seen them in Catholic ones.

HEY EVERYBODY.... GABY25 SAYS THAT...

hehe.. Just kidding.

I never heard of it myself either. My FW is Lutheran. I'm Catholic. I think she wants to do it and that's perfectly fine with me. I like the idea. I think it's cool.

I am Catholic and we are having it. My brothers did too...first time I saw it was in 1995 but it has become popular in the past few years.

Hi :) I was married in 1997 in a Catholic ceremony and we did it. I'm drawing a bit of a blank on when we did it but I'm pretty sure it was right after exchanging rings.

I have been to 3 weddings in the last 2 years and everyone had the Unity candle, so I guess it is 'the thing' now- I think its a nice idea :)

I see it often in Catholic ceremony's but my church (episcopal) does not allow it

We had an interfaith wedding Jewish/Catholic and did the unity candle right after the exchange of rings... I thought it was a very beautiful part of the ceremony.
ETA: The meaning behind the lighting of the candle, 'two becoming one' is also really nice to include.

I think its up to the bride & groom

We personally find it corny for our own personal tastes. I know it symbolizes the union of two families but we just don't think it's 'US'.

I've been to some with them and some without them. I saw nothing 'lost' in those without that part. Except maybe the whispering and shuffling, the awkwardness and humor of watching random family members or the bride/groom themselves LIGHT the unity candle.

Personally I can't stand my stepmother and want her to have very little to do with my wedding so having a unity candle would start hell.

I don't know where the tradition started but we (Jim & I) feel its just one more thing to lengthen the ceremony and is pretty much meaningless (to us).

No offense to anyone who is doing it.. Like I said it just isnt for us. *Shrug*
