So the difference is... with a coffee maker the water drips through the coffee and the filter from the outer container. The percolater the water goes into the carafe and the coffee goes in a filter above it (semi-emerged) and when the water gets hot it brews and percolates (i think semi-boils) and steeps the coffee.
Percolater is old school.

So... I don't think you need both.

coffee maker is more popular these days, but coming from an old school Italian family - they claim perculators make much better coffee. I do think though, that they are more work to clean and less user friendly.

I have a large percolator for when we have many people over, but everyday we use a regular coffeemaker...

The coffee tastes the same....

While I don't drink coffee myself, I have heard from many family members that coffee tastes much, much better from a good percolator

I have the Farberware Percolator and it is the best. Coffee comes out perfectly.
