Is there a nice way of telling FMIL she's an idiot???
our conversation at dinner on Sunday:
me- 'we got our first present in the mail. I think its a shower present but not sure'
FMIL- 'I'm sure you will be getting a lot soon. Most people mail the presents to the couple instead of bringing it to the shower. At the shower, you get money'
me- 'I think thats for a wedding in the New York area. For showers, its like everywhere else- guests bring gifts'
FMIL- ' I have more been to more showers than you have. NO ONE brings gifts anymore- it's just envelopes'
I have seen the pictures from you ladies that have had showers....and I WANT TO WEAR A RIBBON HAT!!!! Do you think she will tell people not to bring gifts, and to just mail them to us??

I got 2 gift cards at the shower ( in addition to small gifts) and one check ( with one large gift!). 2 people that attended sent gifts. 8 non attendees sent gifts ( 2 gave off the HM registry.) One attendee gave off the HM registry.
To sum it up, out of 24 guests, I opened wrapped gifts from 21 of them.
And then my friend totally macGeyvered me a bow bouquet

its just so hard to not laugh in her face when she says such statements in a tone that makes it seem like I'm the crazy one!

First of all :
Second she is def an idiot.....lol she clearly hasn't been to too many recent NY showers!!! EVERYONE gets enough gifts to get either a bow hat, bra, or bok!!!
I had a small office party...7 guests...all gifts...bow hat!!n

she is definitely wrong...is she throwing your shower? Where is she from? haha...I think most of your relatives and anyone from the NY area will bring gifts, don't sweat it!

I was just thinking about this and had to respond again ... Maybe make sure the BP knows to wrap a ton of boxes with plenty of bows (even if boxes are empty) so she will feel like an idiot on her own!!!!

just let her speak on her soap box. FH's family is only 1/2 of the people at your shower right, or even less? i wouldn't worry too much about it. it seems like she is the type of person that 'knows it all' so you're never going to be right with her.

your FMIL should come with an 'off button' or you should have one of those remotes from that Adam Sandler movie 'Click' so you fats forward through her conversations.
I have been to bridal showers all over the country and almost EVERYONE BRINGS A GIFT to a bridal shower. The only reason a person brings a envelope to a bridal shower is if the gift is too big and it has to be shipped to the bride's house. I dont know what your FMIL is talking about but YOU WILL GET A RIBBON HAT at your shower!! hahah
on a side note, my FMIL told me I shouldnt have registered at Macys because it was too expensive? I was like, huh? Macys? too expensive?? I'm not registered at Tiffanys!!! Geez!! I wish I had an off button for her!

1st off - I've never been to a shower where it was all envelopes, I've always given gifts!
2nd - If you get a lot of gifts sent to your house stick a bow on each one, BRING them to your shower and open them ALL!
3rd- There is no way to tell her she's an idiot in a nice way.

Totally nutso.
Showers are gifts wherever you go. Some people might give a GC or honeymoon registry, or maybe if it'sa HUGE gift, they'll send it to the house..but generally it's gifts at the shower.
I think mainly the gifts you get sent to the house are people who can't make the shower.
