Are you ladies getting engraved or thermography?

It costs so much more. I don't know if it's worth it.

Thermography is cheaper than engraving. IMO engraving is not worth the extra money. They both look the same it's just a different process of creating the raised ink.

It's a printing method where the text is raised on top of the paper. Thermography is cheaper than engraving but you still add a few hundred dollars to your total tab.

IMO...the value added isn't enough for the extra cost...regular printing looks just as pretty and I would assume that as long as your invitations are printed on high quality paper your guests will be impressed enough...

Thermography is reg. ink sprayed with a powder baked and raised.

Engraved invitations have a raised print appearance. It is pressed through the paper so that it can be felt on the back of the paper. Its dug into the paper.

No don't get it unless you really have the cash to afford it. You may want to do a embossed or debossed logo/monogram or accent which is expensive but possibly not as much as the entire ensamble being engraved.

Everyone else is correct. There are three types of printing.

1. Engraving: This is beautiful and VERY expensive. Shy of being royalty or a star, don't worry about it.

2. Thermography: This is a type of printing where the lettering is heated and that causes it to raise. So when you run your hand over the print you can feel the lettering.

3. The third type of printing is well, neither of the other two. It is a flat printing like you can do on your printer. Clearly it is nicer and a more in detail process BUT that is the closest I can think of to describe it.

In summary, do what you think is best for you. Most ppl do not keep the invitations. It is a personal choice. Each person feels strongly about different aspects of their weddings. If this is important to you then splerge, if not then don't.

If you have the extra money to do it, do it. Otherwise, don't bother. Except for a few, most of your invitations and envelopes are going in the garbage.

I'm really into quality stationary... But, there is no way we were going to spend well over 1k on invitations....

I found a really good letterpress company in canada (www.marsville.com) which gave an estimate below 50% of most American companies ($1850 vs $650)

If you chose 1 color, and only ask for an invitation + RSVP and envelopes, you could be below $500... not too bad of a pinch... Simultaneously, you'll have extraordinary custom invites!

hope this helps!

here's Martha's expalanation of the numerous printing methods:
