Is this appropriate? Opinions please...

Is this appropriate? Opinions please...

FH and are getting married upstate about 2.5 hours from the island. Because of budget restraints, we are only able to invite family and close friends.

We are considering having an informal party after the wedding for our friends who we were not able to invite (we feel bad just sending out announcements). And because we live overseas--we are not able to get together with these friends often and would really like to see them.

Considering we are not exactly having a 'destination wedding'...is it wrong to have a party celebrating our marriage for people who were not invited to the wedding?

Also--we are going overseas again immediately following the wedding and will return 5 mos later in the winter for a few weeks. So any party will have to wait until then. Do you think this is too long of a gap? None of these people would have seen of yet as a married couple...

I'm curious to know what you girls think of this and would like to hear your opinions...

I think that is a fine idea. You could have a winter party around the holidays to celebrate your marriage. I'm sure your friends would love it and love to see u. If you can't invite everyone to the wedding you shouldn't worry. A small intimate wedding sounds amazing and you have to do what u can afford. weddings these days can be incredibly expensive and i'm sure friends would understand. I dont think it's a problem having another party a few months later.

I definitely think that your idea is appropriate, especially with all of the circumstances surrounding your wedding.

I think its fine. I have a friend who eloped in the USVI and then he and his wife had a party for the friends and family who weren't there about 5 months later on LI, very low key. So I think it would be completely appropriate in your situation. hth!

I think its a great idea..
a friend of a friend of mine was married out in Vegas... and had friends/family all across the US.. they drove cross country and partied wherever their friends/family were.. it took a month!

I think anything works.. you want to have your 'reception' 8 years for now.. go for it! you're celebrating your life and love for each other.

I would usually not think something like this is appropriate, but considering you live overseas, I think that it's a great idea.

I see nothing wrong with this idea. FH's friend got married in California and had a little party in New York for those who were not able to attend.

I think its a wonderful idea and is definitely not too far from your actual wedding.

We went to a wedding party in May at a friend's apartment last year after we didn't make the original cut for her smaller wedding in March. We were NOT offended at all because we understood that she only could have a small reception after her ceremony. They had a great cocktail party and we still brought a generous gift (not crazy expensive but was certainly nice).

I think that is a good idea. Considering the circumstances you are describing, I think you should go for it and that way you get to celebrate with everyone!

Thanks everyone for your responses!

I have to say that I had first posted this question on the Knot community boards and the responses were all negative (people telling me if I want a smaller wedding, then that's what I chose and can't have both, it's offensive, etc.) I guess maybe they were mostly brides from the midwest where weddings cost under $50 a plate.
I'm glad I asked you girls. I feel good again and much more confident about doing it. Thanks for your support!

Another idea would be for a friend or family member to host or throw the party (even if you guys pay for it), so it doesn't come off that you are looking for gifts?
