Our Bestman and his girlfriend (sorry I dont like her) recently had a baby- and FH is going to be the godfather- so the christening is this weekend & they told him he has to order and pay for the cake.
Its not that he minds, just wondering since I never heard of that before- we already bought the baby a beautiful diamond and gold cross, an embroidered christening blanket & a savings bond for college for the occasion.
eta- the christening is on father's day- which i also thought was rude

they said that they are too busy- only thing is FH lives in the bronx and the bakery that they want him to order it from is in peekskill- about an hour away- so I just suggested he call- but bm & his psycho gf expected him to drive there to pick a cake out- crazy

Re: Is this common?
tradition would be that god mother buys the outfit and godfather buys the cross..the cake, that is a bit rude to tell him he has to.

Never heard of such a thing! Very rude to ask a guest - and one who is a guest of HONOR in a way - pay for the cake. I don't care if it's a little-known tradition. It's weird.
And to have the party on Father's Day??? It's one thing if the christening is on Father's Day - churches plan these things for certain Sundays so you can't help that. But have the party next weekend.

Re: Is this common?
Never heard that. Do they know you got him all that other stuff?
When me & cousin baptized our little cousin- I bought the outfit, he got the cross & chain- plus we gave him a bunch of little gifts...we were never asked for anything else.
But- when my friend was recently a godmother..the parents asked her to HOST the party!! At a restaurant they chose, with people they invited...they attempted to convince her this was the 'norm'. I told her to tell them NO WAY. They ended up just going out to dinner..the godparents, grandparents, parents and child.
People have some cajones sometimes!
