Is this crazy?

So FH has always hated his last name, and I suggested that he shorten it and I would then hyphenate vs just keeping mine.

It is....S t e f f e n s m e i e r

I said he should just kick off the meier, and stick with Steffens.

His father told me that was a stupid suggestion. I think it rocks. And our future kids will thank him.

Am I nuts?

I think it's really up to him, I can see how his father might not like the idea bc it is his last name, but if your fh hates it then go for it.

My mom's father is Polish and his real last name is Bratenievich ( pronounced Bra-ten-yev-itch) and he cut it down to Banish before he married my grandmother. My mom and uncles are very thankful lol

To be honest- I dont think you should be changing last names, I love peoples last names and the culture and family behind them! yes maybe its a mouthful but it came from somewhere and someone Just my opinion though!

It's a tough call, and I can see why his dad might dislike the idea. If he doesn't shorten his last name, would you still hyphenate?

My FH doesn't care whether or not I take his name and at one point even suggested that the two of us just pick a random last name and change our names to that!

No- FH is totally cool with me keeping my name. I would just like to have the same name as my kid in some capacity. I would not hyphenate if he keeps it long...if he shortens it, I will hyphenate

some people do it, some people don't - it's totally a personal preference

i work with a guy whose last name is Leuis but it's REALLY Luciano and his grandfather changed it Leuis because he didn't want to be associated with Lucky Luciano.

so if he keeps his full last name, you would keep your last name? and if he shortens it, you would hyphenate your name to his? i just wanted to make sure i got that right.

i wouldn't ever ask my FH to change his last name. I love his last name better than mine anyway and i think it will match my first name perfectly.
however, if this is something that you FH is ok with, then think about it for a few months and revisit the subject, it should be a decision he comes up with himself and is not pressured to do or not do by any of his family members. it really is a personal decision.
