We went to our hall yesterday to pick out the menu and while my parents were talking to the maitre'd, the BM handed me a piece of paper about who to tip and wrote in $1200. That money is supposed to go to the maitre'd, 2 captains and the bridal attendent. I'm sorry, but I think $1200 is ridiculous! I didn't even tell my parents because they would have flipped out. I plan on calling my BM tomorrow and giving her a piece of my mind. First of all, a tip is not payment. It's supposed to be a little something that is given based on performance. I will tip them whatever I damn well please and NOONE is going to tell me how much. Am I right for being this heated?

Also, I wasn't even aware that I had to tip 2 captains in addition to the maitre'd. Does anyone esle have to do that?

I would be pretty pissed off too!! That's the most ridiculous and presumptuous thing I've ever heard from a catering hall! These LI catering halls are really getting out of hand with this tipping business too.
I wouldn't say anything now though. Tip whatever you damn well please on the day of the wedding, and afterwards write them a little letter telling them that they should seriously consider ending this insulting practice of TELLING customers how much to tip.

i wouldnt call and complain until AFTER the wedding. just give what YOU want, and then when its all over, call and complain about the nerviness of 'suggested tips'

I would skip complaining until after your wedding and just give what you want to give.
How many guests? $1200 is absurd.
We were told $3-4pp for maitre D, captain, and bridal attendant. We are having about 150 guests so we'll give 500 and call it a night, that of course is if all goes well.

Thst's just the thing, it wasn't even presented in a 'suggested tip' kind of way. It was very matter-of-fact, this is what you HAVE to tip.

Yea, she should not have given you that. Our BM said that the maitr'd usually gets a tip. and WE ASKED HOW MUCH.. and he told us, whatever we wanted, but people usually give $2-3 per head.. reasonable.. NOT $1200!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still, I would complain only AFTER your reception. You do not want to make people who are handling your food angry.

the captians are the head waiters- one usually sets up the dining room and one sets up the cth. I thought that the Matre D' tips them out from what he receives.

I have no idea what captains are. I'm guessing they're the people below the maitre'd, but it was news to me that they were supposed to be getting tipped. I figured out that they must split the $1200 something like this: $500- maitre'd $300- for each captain $100- bridal attendant
ETS- there is simply no way I'm tipping that much.

It is a crazy amount. And that was totally wrong for your banguet manager that this was the amount that you HAVE to give. I agree with the other girls- don't say anything before hand because you don't want it to affect your wedding. Give what you feel they deserve and then say something after the wedding.

That is just ridiculous - I dont mean to sound cheap but for Petes sake, we are already paying gratuity, anything they get from me is if they went above and beyond with their service. If they give me a sheet like that, I will smile and give them whatever I want, and AFTER the wedding they will hear it from me for sure.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it their job to do what they do...captains, maitre'D..etc? Also TIPS is an acronym for To Insure Proper Service or To Insure Prompt Service. Gratuity is just that..a thank you. Tip what you want based on their performance.

THEY'D get nothing now! Besides how much u are paying for the crescent to put 1200 on top of that. If we had know what happened at our wedding they wouldnt have gotten CRAP!

Yeah, wait until after the wedding. Then you tip who you think did a good job. If your captain is a moron, then I would not tip them. How would you know what to tip if it is based on performance on the day of the wedding.
