Is this ironic?

Is this ironic?

Before leaving for work, I squeezed half of a lemon into my water bottle.
Now I have a paper cut on my tongue (why did I actually lick the stupid envelope).

Is this real irony or Alanis Morrisette needs a dictionary pretend irony?

Well we know that it's not rain on your wedding day or a black fly in your chardonay!

I think that is like rain on your wedding day! It's a free ride, when you already paid. It's the good advice that you just didn't take.......

eta - I knew you meant unfortunate events but I liked that Lemony was in there.

HAH! I remember, I think this was on pop-up video or something - they said none of what AM was singing about was actually ironic and amounted to little more than a series of 'bummers'

dictionary.com says this:

Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs: “Hyde noted the irony of Ireland's copying the nation she most hated” (Richard Kain). An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity. See Usage Note at ironic.

by this definition, I think I would say no...

Damn you Alanis Morrisette. I've let you screw up my whole understanding of irony (which I actually had no trouble with until you came along).

Haha Wikipedia is my new fav

'Alanis Morissette’s popular 1995 song “Ironic” breathed new life into the ongoing controversy over the definition of irony. The song attracted a great deal of attention from prescriptivists for its (arguably) blatant misuse of the word ironic. Morissette’s alleged misuses of the word include the following:

It’s like a traffic jam/When you’re already late
He won the lottery/And died the next day
Among those who assert that the song uses an invalid definition of irony, many find it ironic that Morissette would write a song titled “Ironic” with no actual irony in it. In 2004, Morissette herself acknowledged that the song doesn’t live up to the definition, which is what makes it ironic. But even that is not technically ironic.'

I remember Palebride pointing that out a while ago (irony that the whole song misuses the word ironic).
