Is this normal for a dog?.

My fiance and I have an 8(?) yr old male golden retriever. We got him about 2 years ago from the Golden Retriever rescue foundation (ligrr.org).
About 2-3 months ago Barney started licking the rugs and the couch. We got to the point when we leave for work during the day we put old sheets on the couch to protect it when we're gone. Does anyone know why dogs do this? Should we take him to the Vet?

My 3 year old American Bulldog does this. She licks our sheets, the couch, just about anything she can get her tongue on. We really don't think much of it, until she starts to start licking hazardous things, I guess.
