Is this rude?

FH's aunt is very wealthy and always dresses beautifully. She has mentioned a few times over the past few weeks that she has a very dressy gown to wear to our wedding, but she wasn't sure if it would be okay. I told her the dress code is black tie optional. So last night, we were at their house, and his aunt, his mom, and I were talking. His aunt asked his mom if the dress was too dressy. His mom replied, 'It's definitely dressier than mine, but it's you. Wear it.' So his aunt asked if she would be upset. His mom said no. I said, 'But you're the mother of the groom...you don't want it dressier than yours...' She said she didn't care. Then his aunt asked if my mom would be upset. I said 'She might be.' Is that rude???? Then his mom walked away because I could tell it annoyed her.

I told his aunt if it's what I'm picturing, it's like Miss America-esque...rhinestones, glitz everywhere. So then she showed me the dress. It ended up being different than I pictured and I told her it was perfect. I told her she should definitely wear it.

Do you think it was rude of me to be honest??? I know my mom, and I didn't want her to be upset. I also didn't want his aunt to feel uncomfortable if she arrived overdressed.

that's definitely not rude!

FMIL is worried about her gown color choice 'showing up' the MOH. To each his/ her own!

And, seeing the dress was the best thing to do! now everyone is OK, right?

Don't feel bad. This is the one time in your life no one can judge you for being honest. It sounds like you weren't mean or rude, you just told the truth.

FMIL probably didn't want to insult your aunt, or didn't realize how important it is for you to make sure the MOB and MOG are showcased also.

I'm sure the aunt will be over it in a few days, especially since she gets to wear the dress she wanted to. And FMIL will get over it too. I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

def not rude. Thats why the aunt asked you because she doesn't want to upstage your mom & I think that was respectful of her. You did the right thing.

I don't think it's rude at all. You want to look out for your own mother since it's your wedding.

It's always best to be honest, even if it might hurt someone. Doesn't seem like you were harsh at all, though. I wouldn't sweat it, you were just looking out for your FMIL!
