Is this true or is this guy full of Cr@p???

My DH and I are trying to keep our cell numbers but switch carriers. We went to cingular to see their deals/phones and the salesman there said that there are huge problems with switching carriers and keeping your # right now. He suggested changing our number since we could have service turned on right away. He said that if we kept our numbers, service would take a long time to be turned on- weeks!

Try calling another carrier and see what they say. Its pretty competitve now so I would think they'll give you any info you want over the phone. Why would they care if you change your # or not? Is it less paperwork for them? I havent had to do this but I am curious.

I think that is bs. My husband manages a cellphone store in Port Washington which they sell almost every carrier other than sprint. I will ask him for you to see what he says.

Def not a bad idea. You should call the carrier directly and see what they say. Either way I will ask hubby for you tonight.

There have been reports of some glitches with keeping your number..

San Francisco Chronicle

I think that you're going to find glitches with any sort of thing like this. So it's your call (no pun intended) - either do it and hopefully you won't have problems with switching or just get a new number.

Good luck!

Did you see 20/20 last night? They did a segment on switching carriers and people are having a lot of problems switching and keeping their number.

It is true. The guy at the store where Danielle and I just got our new phones said the same thing to us. He told us we would be better just switching our numbers. He said we could wait up to 3 weeks for our number to be carried over from at&t to tmobile....So we changed our numbers. I cannot be without a cell phone for that long.

I would believe him - it's such a new feature that there are bound to be glitches.

I want to switch carriers and keep my number as well. I happened to catch 20/20 last night and there was a story about people doing the same thing and having to spend HOURS on the phone trying to switch carriers. All the consumer advocates said that it may be worth it to switch later, maybe 3-6 months down the road because this is a new concept and a lot of carriers were not prepared for this at all.

they had this on the news last week that SOME Places were taking 1-2 weeks due to people not presenting name/address exactly as it is on their old bill. They said on the news make sure you bring your bill with you so your name and address match exactly then it should only take a few hours.

I know that RCN was going to buy out my phone number from Verizon (line line phone) and it took forever - we ended up just keeping Verizon

and

DH's company monitors computer networks of other companies...one of their biggest clients is a cellphone provider...and he says its been just awful...

the server that all the cell providers connect to is having major issues...since its so complex they haven't worked out the bugs

i have done this (t-mobile to nextel) and it is somewhat of a pain in the a$$.... took a ahwile, but it CAN be done... it sounds like this other carrier just wants to get you over asap.

WHen we went to verizon to check out their deals after this guy, verizon said that he could do it in a matter of hours!????? I'm so confused I don't know what hit me! I don't care about keeping my #- My DH just doesn't want the hassel of calling all his friends and changing it.... I'm starting to think it would be more of a hassel keeping the number. Hmmmmmm have to think more about this!

I changed form t mobile to verizon this week and changed my #. It was too much of a hassle to have to wait.

This is why I figured I'd keep my service for a while. It works just fine. Im not a big believer in living off your cell phone. I use it pretty sparingly, so service options aren't that big of a deal. I don't need 500 minutes. I barely use more than 180. The reason I moved up to 300 was because it was free to upgrade.

I want a phone that has ringtones and a camera but that's just me being fancy. For all the trouble I've heard about I can wait. My phone number has been the same since I moved to New York over Four Years ago.. I'm not about to change it.

Ok...hubby said that yes it can take from 24hrs to 7 business days. He said its the most complicated thing to do right now in the business but if a customer wants it he tells them the time period for the switch and does it for them. Either way he says it is horrible. Hopefully it will get better with time.
