FH and I just went to a friends wedding last night in Boston. The wedding was beautiful and the bride looked gorgeous. After the church, we all went to the reception hall. i was super excited for the CH, it's my favorite part of the reception. Silly, i know, but I love the appetizers We get there and it's open bar, but I can't find food anywhere. After looking through the entire room, I find one small cheese tray with a few crackers in the corner Needless to say, I was disappointed. i have never been to a wedding with that little food for the CH? Just curious if I am the only weirdo who loves CH food??

I feel like that is normal for anything not in the NY Metro area....I too went to a wedding in Boston @ the harvard club and there was a CH but not like the way we do it on LI......also the wedding i went to in Lake Placid had cheese and crackers and open bar only for one hour!........

I've been to two weddings (one in NC and one in Penn) where the CH just had cheese and crackers. We probably over-do it compared to other weddings. CH is the best part though! I'd rather not have the dinner part!

Cocktail hours like we have them in NY are not the nor, or the tradition in New England and many other places in the country. Basically, they just give you drinks (many times it's cash bar) and fruit, cheese and crackers. It's just not the tradition in many other places.
Frankly I would give up our fancy cocktail hours if it meant being having more halls be affordable for people here!

Re: Is this weird? repost from BHB
It is typical for people to do that out of NYC. At my uncles wedding which was in New Orleans they just had Tea Sandwhiches and then the cake. My parents just went to my cousins wedding in NC and the CH was cheese and crackers and for the dinner....you had to tell them want you wanted on the response card which I thought was kind of weird.

big CH's aren't normally done in other states...it seems to be mainly a Long Island thing

asking what you want for dinner used to be a common thing...it still is in a lot of states...its only a recent thing that catering halls have decided to give the guests the option of choosing the actual night of the wedding

Re: Is this weird? repost from BHB
My best friend got married last year. Most of her in laws are from the south. They were loading up at the CH hour cause they thought that was it.
Onyly around here do we have these elaborate CH followed by an elaborate sit down dinner.

Re: Is this weird? repost from BHB
Only the metro NYC areas does CH's like we do. In most other states/cities they have open bar and usually passed hors d'ouvres and cheese and crackers, fruit trays, etc. I've never been to one like they have around NYC anywhere else.
The weirdest one we ever went to was in Minnesota- their CH was drinks and chex mix in a big silver bowl!!!!

I love cocktail hour, but I've noticed that they aren't popular in other areas. I've been to weddings in Minnesota and the midwest and a few didn't have a cocktail hour.

My best friend's wedding was out of town this weekend also...their cocktail hour consisted of a few passed hors' devours, cheese and cracker tray, shrimp cocktail in a bowl, and fruit platter. It was very nice...but def. not new york- I think we just do things differently on long island....there's a lot more involved in weddigns here!

OMG, I felt the same way when I was at a wedding in Conn. this weekend. There were few passed hors devours, cheese and cracker tray, veggie tray but....not even a COCKTAIL SHRIMP! I must say that thanks to that, I didn't overeat myself as usual and had an awesome time!! otherwise... But just wanted to share that

I have heard of this. A friend had her reception in NC and since shes from NY it was very LI, with a full CH. She was telling me some of the guests were a little confused b/c they are used to a much more toned down CH. And I have to agree I love the CH it's the best part of eating!
