So we are invited to a wedding for a very wealthy relative. They are having a private affair at place that I know isn't cheap. It's in the D.c area but I don't know what to give as a gift. I am just thinking what amount could I possibly give them when they are in need of nothing. Would it be wrong to call a charity to see if they have like a card like the scrolls people use as favor that reads 'In lieu of a gift we are giving 'whatever' amount' to such and such charity. I figure it is a nice gesture and I thought it was a nice idea because I know a lot of wedding favors are those gorgeous scrolls that go to a nice cause of their choice. What do you think. Be brutally honest if need be.

Re: Is this wrong?
Honestly, I would just give them the money. You never know they may donate it all after the wedding. Unless its stated 'no gifts' or 'donate our gift' I would just give them the money. What about nice cystal from Tiffanys?

And honestly - if I received a donation in our name as a gift, I would be flattered. But I don't think other people would feel the same way so I'd stick with a gift.

I would just give them money. Just because they are wealthy, doesn't mean all of their guests will be. Just give what you can and don't worry about what they will think.

Re: Is this wrong?
I think a crystal item from tiffany, or another well-known gift maker (waterford, kate spade, etc), would be very nice. Don't feel that you have to spend a lot because it's at a pricey place or because they are rich. spend what you would have spent if it was a wedding here for friends.

One gives what one can afford.

I agree with the other girls. Give what you can afford. The hosts have to know that not everyone is in the same financial situation as them.

I would give the same gift you'd give to any other couple for their wedding.

Re: Is this wrong?
Even rich people like money.
Don't discriminate they are people too!
Give what you can, they will understand, and I bet appreciate it more than a gift they didn't choose.

Do they have a registry? i'd give them something nice from there. Or what money you'd normally give anyone. Don't give them more or less than usual.

I would give what you can afford or I like the idea of some crystal from Tiffanys. While personally, I think doing the donation is nice, some people might not take to it as well.
Good luck!

I would just give them the money...they may be rich, but they are still shelling out the bucks for the wedding! really nice thought though!

Re: Is this wrong?
although i would really appreciate a donation in my name instead of a gift....because what better than helping fund a foundation that helps a good cause.
But unfortunately not everyone is like that So I think maybe a nice crystal from tiffanys as well or whatever you can afford. I went to a very expensive wedding in Okeha Castle 2 years ago with FH. And he wanted to give like $800 just from the 2 of us. I almost slapped him haha. I was like well just because these people are rich (and believe me they were ) doesn't mean we are and doesn't mean we have to give them a better than normal gift. Give what you and FH can afford.
