Island hopping in Hawaii

You fly. The inter-island airfare is relatively cheap. Hawaiian Air and Go Airlines sometime has flights for $39.

There was a ferry (Hawaii Superferry) that operated for about a year, but they had so many legal issues with Hawaiians saying it was bad for the environment that they recently shut down. They only operated in the spring/summer though - they weren't allowed to run during whale season.
