I went this afternoon to a local pizza place and there were 2 teachers in there talking horribly about the students they teach, calling them stupid and smelly, etc, very loudly mind you! it gets me angry that a teacher would do this. My FH teaches emotionally disturbed children in NYC in one of the worst areas and if he talks to me about them he does not make fun of them or talks so everyone can hear about it in the middle of a restaurant! Sorry, I just had to vent. I still want to call up the school and complain, I am so mad! (The school was across the street!)

Sounds like the teachers were very young and immature.Seems like they were mentally students themselves.Nice example they are setting,huh!

Actually they looked like they were in there early 40's and obviously in the field for the benefits!

I think there is a time and place for everything and talking loudly about a student in a restaurant is wrong. What if one of those students parent was sitting behind the teacher.
That is just wrong. Teachers are suppose to be caring, understanding and give a child an education that will last a lifetime, and be a positive influence on young minds. Then to sit there and hear a teacher call a student stupid is just wrong.
I would be very angry as well and make an annoumous call to the school letting them know of what kind of educators they are employing. The school may not do anything to the teachers, but at least you can feel better about informing them of the teachers they have.

I know that is why I posted it... my dad was a teacher and my FH is a teacher and it gets me soooooooooooooooooooooo angry! I am going to call the school in a few days, I do not want to be obvious about it. I cannot wait to tell Fh about it when he gets home today.

WOW!!!! Those are some pretty stupid teachers! I have been teaching for 5 years and I have NEVER talked bad about any of my students! I love each one! As for them talking about them badly in a public place near the school is just completely dumb to me!

I would call the school if i were you !! It makes me sick that there are SOOO MANYYY underqualified and 'poor excuses' for a teacher, out there, and I am having trouble getting into a Masters Program... (thats another post altogether!)
You should call the school. Thats disgusting !

That is terrible! I would never want my child to have a teacher like that! That isn't how you should talk about someone, espeically your students, and teachers, above all, should know better. I bet they wouldn't tolerate their students talking about each other that way! It sounds like they also need a lesson in confidentiality. I work in a school also and couldn't imagine speaking like that about my students. It is one thing to discuss them with a fellow educator but there is a proper, professional way to do that.

i'M A TEACHER AND NEVER WOULD i EVER DO THAT children have hard enough time growing up in this world, it's amazing that some people are accepted into the education worls espically ith atitudes like that. Ugggggg

That's terrible, being a teacher is like being a doctor, you should never talk about things like that in public. Shame on them--by the grace of God that could be their poor child.

First off...I am not defending this behavior at all...
I have actually had to tell some (new, but not younger teachers - remember many new teachers are starting a second career) to keep their voices down if we go out to lunch...and not to talk about students...i.e at the pizza place (I was home sick...so it wasn't me btw )
but I think that this is due to stress...if you were upset with a coworker or client...you might vent to someone else...
I really don't think (hope) that it was labeling...just frustration

It sounds like these teachers were venting - we do that a lot! However, I agree that to call a student stupid is in very poor taste. I will say that a student did something stupid (like cheat on a test), but that's labeling the behavior, not the person. I believe that students are good people who do stupid things at times (but don't we all?)
