I was really freaking out about this! As math teacher I am used to saying numbers like 'two thousand five'. So when the lady put the 'and' in there I was nervous. However I asked some English teachers at my school and apparently when it is written out like that for that purpose, it is 'two thousand and five'.

As a math teacher, you should know that when 'and' is put in a number, the word is used to represent a decimal point.

As a math teacher myself, I had my inviations say two thousand five, becuase that is proper mathematics!

I second 'Two thousand five.' You wouldn't say Nineteen AND ninety-nine for 1999, would you?

invitation custom keeps the 'and' even though it's not mathematically correct.

Invitation etiquette is with 'and'

ex:
Mr. and Mrs. John David Smith
request the honor of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
Mary Ann
to
Mr. Edward Malcolm Jones
Saturday, the tenth of May
two thousand and eight
at four o'clock
Good Shepherd Church
Andover, Massachusetts

That is always what I was taught as well. My invites said two thousand two - without the and.

This is EXACLTLY why I did not put the 'and'. It's not proper English. I never say the and even when I say 2005.

That was kind of nasty....
Anyway, I KNOW when the 'and' should be used but if tradition (and the 50 books that say two thousand AND five' are you going to argue that people for years have made this mistake? I even took out REALLY old invitations and they said 'nineteen hundred AND seventy five'. I agree it is not mathematically correct but it is, according to several English teachers, grammatically correct.

I am also a teacher, which is why I was confused about this after being told that we only use 'and' when talking about a decimal point- but then FH said to me 'I think when you say '2005' you are supposed to use a comma like 'two thousand, five'.
Long story short, I just decided, as wrong as it may be, to use 'two thousand and five' since none of my other family members are teachers, and I am sure no one is as anal as me to realize it! ha.

Thanks for your comments! Sorry to cause any drama!!! ha

Both are acceptable. 2005 signifies the number of years AD (don't mean to get religious - it's just used to explain it in calendar terms)

Two thousand and five (years since the birth of Christ.)

OR

Two thousand five years (AD)

You could drop the 'and' and it would still be fine.

Put the 'AND'. I've asked several invitation places and they all say the proper invitation etiquette is the put the 'And'. Check out invitation web sites... they say the same.
I put the 'And' in mine.

I removed the 'and'
