It poured on 3/13/10!
I had my bridal shower on 3/13 and it was so much fun! The event itself wasn't a surprise - because I live in Chicago, so I obviously had to plan to come out to LI that weekend - so my mom made it that the place it was being held at was a surprise, and I was definitely surprised, in a good way! My mom planned pretty much the whole thing by herself, with only a little help from my bridal party... which wasn't really their fault, my bridesmaid and bridesman live in NYC but they're both working and in grad school, and my MOH lives in Boston, so not much you can do from there. anyway, my mom told me later that she had a really hard time finding a place, b/c a lot of restaurants want you to have like 40 or 50 people (we only had about 30), and it would be $40 or more per person, even for some restaurants that were not so nice. she felt really discouraged! finally she was looking around, and she found out that The Carltun has some smaller rooms where they do events like bridal showers, engagement parties, etc., and their prices are actually competitive to those of restaurants - she wouldn't say exactly how much pp, but she did say it was under $50.
honestly, I was amazed. first of all, The Carltun is amazing! I never looked there for my wedding (totally out of my price range!), but what a phenomenal place. the room we had it in was this cute little room tucked away upstairs and it was just perfect! (I included a picture below). The service was also impeccable! We were there for four hours, and we had our own waitstaff for the event. They came around and asked people if they wanted juice or champagne punch, and passed out some hors d'oeurves. I didn't get a chance to eat much of those, b/c I was saying hi to everyone! For lunch, we had a 3 course plated menu. We each had our own menu cards that had my name and the shower date on them. We had a field greens salad with blackberries, raspberries, and candied walnuts in a raspberry vinaigrette. For lunch we had a choice of almond-crusted salmon with mashed potatoes served in a plaintain crisp, chicken (can't remember how it was served but it looked really good!), and pasta primavera. Then for dessert, we had a strawberry shortcake that they make there, that said 'Showers of Happiness - Sarah' on it, decorated w/ pretty flowers. When they served the cake, they painted my name on all the plates in colored frosting!
I was totally blown away! The whole day was really special and amazing, and I would definitely highly recommend The Carltun to anyone who needs to plan a shower!!!
