Re: ITALIAN BRIDES: WHat traditions are you following?
We did these: To ward off evil spirits, a groom in Italy might carry a piece of iron in his pocket. The bride wears a veil to hide her face from jealous spirits.
Symbolic foods for fertility and for good luck are 'confetti' (we gave 5 to each guest) -- candy covered almonds tied in mesh bags; and twists of fried dough powdered with sugar called wanda (bow ties).
Before the reception is over, the bride and groom usually break a glass.
The best man greets everyone coming to the reception with a tray of liquor. (the elder family members were greeted this way)
This was fun - All the men at the reception kiss the bride for good luck -- and to make the groom jealous.
We also danced the tarantella (more than once) and Dh's grandmother held the satin bag (my grandmother was sick & could not attend.
We also had Italian Wedding soup...but I cannot remember how to say it

Did you ever hear about putting the statue of Mary (if you're catholic) outside 3 weeks before the wedding and your day will be sunny?

I hope they don't do this to me but for my friend's wedding we ecorated their bed for their wedding night. Supposedly only virgins are supposed to do this. The point is to make it a little difficult for them to actually get into bed...

1. The viel is on until the end of the ceramony to ward off evil spirits
2. The bonbonierra (jordon almonds bunched in 3)
3. Tarantella
4. Money bag (my mom is making me one out of part of her wedding dress!)
5. and I will be doing the whole 'burry Mary for good weather' thing that I just read!
also...and this isn't really Italian perse`, but at every family affair, my mother's side, we all have a small toast for my Nonno who died almost 8 years ago...a little amaretto on holidays to remember him.

I am not Italian but my DH is. My DH's mom kept telling me (about 500 times) I had to do this before my wedding. I did not (don't believe in that kind of stuff pluss I am not Italian) but she did. It still rained the day before and early that morning but the sun came in the middle of my ceremony. She also did it for her daughter's wedding this year and she had almost the same exact type of day as I did.
I do believe she said that Mary has to be facing out the window....
I did not want any ethnic traditions at my wedding but DJ unfortunately played a couple Italian songs (tarentalla and another) after a few requests (which I think came from DH's non-Italian co-workers). I was pretty annoyed because I felt that did not include my family's ethnicity into the reception. Stupid me did not put them on the do not play list. My guests (except for some of my family who knew I did not want this and myself) did seem to enjoy the dance however.

We just did the almonds attached to our favors.
But as for Mary and the weather I remember being in Catholic grammar school and we were always told to put her in the window so we would have good weather for a class trip, graduation, communion, etc.

I've never heard of the green pj's either. We aren't doing any of the traditions.
We are very un- Italian Italians. We are both only part Italian, althuogh Italianis the largest common denoinator. We aren't doing anything Scottish, Belgian, or German either.
We are giving what my mother calls' substantial' favors. Mikasa bowls. I've been told this is an Italian thing.
Food as a favor was not allowed. (Unless it was just an add-on)

I'm half Italian, but I've been raised Jewish. FH family is VERY Italian, but we're actually not doing too many traditional things. We will have the tarantella and some other Italian songs.

i have to wear red panties that day. we are having a few of the italian dances as well. and the almonds are pretty much a must. i also know that my sister is buying armani statues to give to all of my bridesmaids at the shower (i had to do the same for hers). i'm sure there are more, but i will have to think.
oh, and i have a statue of Mary in front of my house.
