Italy anyone?

Ok so FH and I still haven't figured out our honeymoon which is starting to stress me out a little..
We were thinking of a week in caribbean then my sis (MOH) was like 'you guys dont have kids yet and before you start grad school..this is your chance to go to Italy!'

This is FH and my dream trip...sooo..I am really looking into it..Is a cruise a good way to go where we get to dock in a few cities.

Any good recommendations ladies??

Re: Italy anyone?

I've been to Italy but we did a land tour, not a cruise. There is so much to see that I felt that with a tour it was very rushed (although we did hit all of the highlights). I've heard it's pretty much the same on a cruise. You're only in each city for a day and it's hard to pick and choose what to do. Also, on a cruise there's the temptation to eat on the ship (after all that's what you paid for). However, going to Italy and not experiencing the food is a major CRIME!!!

I would suggest doing a package. There are plenty of 'tours' out there that arrange your airfare, hotel and transportation between cities and then leave the rest up to you.

That's how I traveled through Spain and Greece and I would highly reccomend it. When you arrive in each city, there is a tour director meeting you who takes you to the hotel and tells you what there is to see and do. If you want to do any excursions or sightseeing, you make the arrangements through this person.

Also, in most hotels in the major Italian cities, (Rome, Florence, Venice) there are concierges in the hotels who are more than happy to assist.

Italy is incredibly beautiful and like I said -- it has the best food in the world!!!

Re: Italy anyone?

for my honeymoon I wanted to go to Greece and Italy. I did a 7 day mediterranean cruise and spent a second week in Italy. Depends on where you want to go, what time of year, and what you feel like doing. Our cruise sailed from Venice to Bari, then to Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Olympia, Croatia, and back to Venice. The 2nd week we stayed in Rome, Venice and Florence. I had already been to those cities but DH hadn't and I really wanted him to see them. Next time I'd love to do the countryside. Check out some of the reviews - a few brides went to Italy on their honeymoons.

there are longer cruises that look amazing - Celebrity has a new ship and the itinerary is great. If you ONLY want to do Italy, I wouldn't suggest a cruise. I'd suggest what I did 8 years ago, Venice, Florence, Siena, Rome - then the amalfi coast. the amalfi coast is beautiful and AMAZING and a great HM spot. I did all the planning and you can book excursions through most hotels (which i definitely recommend for places like the Vatican).

good luck and definitely take advantage of it and go to Italy if you can. and luckily the euro has come down a LOT since i went, in June. FM me if you need info.

I've traveled a bit throughout Europe and specifically Italy and did not use a tour or go on a cruise. For me, tours and cruises are too confining and I think you can do much better on your own.

We rented a car and made our own tour - this way you do not have to stick to anyone else's itinerary and you can tailor the trip to your desires more easily. If you're not comfortable driving there - Italy's rail system is pretty good as well. (Although, we even got lost looking for my cousin's house in a small town and a man who spoke zero English was nice enough to get in his car and have us follow him to the correct town!)
