Hey girls, I'm trying to plan a surprise trip to Italy for DH's 30th birthday and am totally overwhelmed. As he has never been there, I'm planning to do Rome, Venice, and Florence with maybe a day trip or two.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me? Should we go on a tour? If not, how the heck do I plan the itinerary?
Any insight or must sees would really be helpful.
Thanks!

Laurie - would you recommend your other hotels too? Any cons?
I am thinking of booking this place in rome for the view alone. My DH is an interior designer/architect and would totally crap his pants. Albergo del senato
The hotel in Rome - no. The location was great, but that was about the only good thing about it. I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending it.
The place we stayed in Florence - was a bit out of the 'center' of the city (but close to the train station). We loved it though and didn't mind the distance, it was a nice walk. It was the nicest hotel we had stayed in while there.
That hotel looks awesome! And it's #1 on Trip Advisor - that means something IMO. Go for it!
