Italy help please!

Italy help please!

OK, I am totally confused once again! FH and I have planned to stay at a villa outside of Florence for the last week of our honeymoon. The 'problem' now lies with getting back to the airport in time for our flight! I believe the flight (we haven't booked yet) leaves at about 1:30pm. Is this enough time to get from the villa (about 10 minutes outisde of Florence) to Florence to Rome and to the airport? How long does this take? (I am having trouble with the websites!) Is it better to stay in Rome another night? Please help! TIA!

Hey Date Twin!!!

My TA told me that the ride from Florence to Rome by Rail is about an hour and a half. So factoring time to get to the Rail and from the Rail to the airport, I would guestimate at least 2.5 hours.

If your flight is at 1:30pm, you have to be there by around 11am. So if you check out and try to catch a Rail train by 8am or so, I think you'd be FINE! But check with your TA to be sure. You can always contact my TA (Tom Varghese - email is [email protected]). Tell him Yesenia recommended you to him -he'll be more than happy to answer your q's and maybe he can help you book your rail train for that morning.

If you're driving, I imagine it's less time than the rail, but can't be sure.

Also, we are still considering Italy - do you mind sharing your planned itinerary? Thanks!

Well, the trouble is we didn't use a TA. We booked the hotels on our own. I am going to try to contact the villa to see if they can help - we actually had to book them through their TA I guess. The train goes into the main station in Rome, correct? Then I would have to take another train to the airport? I am confused by the websites and can't figure out which station is which. Thanks for your help!

Re: Italy help please!

Beware of italian trains!

They cannot be trusted. We were relying on a train to take us from naples to rome in 2004, and all the trains were down due to a strike (I forget who was striking (wasn't related to the trains), but they dumped trash on all the rails, and obviously the trains couldn't run.

We were attempting to get more info, and all the hotel workers were looking at us like we were nuts to even expect the trains to be running on a given day. That was the clue that we made a huge travel error in relying on them for our transportation.

Does florence have an airport? If so, do a connection... much more reliable than the trains!

You will probably have to take a taxi from the rome train station the the airport. I don't remember any trains saying to go to the airport there. If I were you I would stay in rome the night before just to make sure your there and on time and everything. This way if the trains aren't running for some reason you still have a day to figure out if you have to rent a car or something to get you there.

Just saw this info:

The Leonardo Express is the name of the train that'll shuttle you from Rome's main international airport, Fiumicino, to central Rome's Termini station.

here is the site

Thanks girls! Maybe it is better to stay in Rome another night. It may be worth the money to not have to go through the trouble of worrying.

Has anyone stayed at any of the hotels near the airport?

yeah it took over an hour to drive from Rome to the airport - since its not really IN Rome

stay in Rome the night before. Have your hotel get you a taxi. . . make sure its a REAL taxi and not some guy

We got some fake taxi - which WAS cheaper BUT we had to pay him before we got there. . . i had to sit in the front AND when he let us out we had to like shake his hand and pretend he was a friend driving us to the airport!!! (these taxis are illegal) I mean it turned out okay in the end but it was scary! and probabty worse if you dont speak the language!

I got stuck on a stopped train for about 5 hours due to train fire. . . they kind of stink and i wouldnt depend on them

as for strikes - just part of life in Italy. . . Alitalia was on strike like the entire time i was there. . . thank goodness they started working the day i left!

PS - please be careful with the trains. . . i speak italian fluently and i basically annoyed everyone around me every moment - they change tracks like 5 minutes before they leave! and it is annoying bc they will only announce the last stop on your line so you have to know which train you need . . . .

Wow Thanks! WE'll probably be totally lost since we don't know the language! This should make for an interesting honeymoon!
