Re: Italy in July
I went to Italy July of 2000. I don't remember it being too hot. Europe has adifferent kind of dry heat. Much easier to bear than NYs hot summers.

FH and I were in Italy this past July. We were in the Alps and in the lake region, which is obviously very North and the weather was comfortable. We spent some time in Milan (still very north) and it was hot!
p.s. my avatar pic is of FH and I in front of the fountain in Milan. We absolutely loved Italy. I couldn't recommend it more!!!!

When i was tlaking to my travel agent she was telling me that she went to Italy at the end of July and it is hot!
Make sure that the places you stay have AIR CONDITIONING! Because a lot of hotels DO NOT!

We are going to Italy on our honeymoon, too. I was also told by my travel agent to not only make sure the hotel has air conditioning, but make sure they turn it on. A lot of the lower star hotels say they have air, but don't actually use it. Honestly, I didn't know if I could believe that, but then an aquaintance (sp?) of ours came back from there last summer right when we were researching our HM and he said that happened to him. He was so pissed b/c the hotel advertised the air, but never put it on and he was dying of heat. Make sure you book reputable hotels. My travel agent specializes in HM's and Italy. FM if you want her info.

We went to Italy for our honeymoon from in late June - early July. It will be hot, but it is not unbearable. We laid out by the pool and soaked up the sun it was great. We also did a lot of walking around town and it definately gets hot, but as long as you dress accordingly and drink lots of water you will be fine. Just make sure your hotel has A/C and if renting a car that is also has A/C. Enjoy!!
P.S. If you have questions about the Amalfi Coast that was one of our stops. I would be willing to help!

I was in Italy at the end of May. We visited the Amalfi coastline. It was warm but not unbearable, especially since you're right off the water. The Amalfi coast is BEAUTIFUL!!!! I had an amazing time. You will love it!

I agree with all of this. I went at the same time as Babybride (we got married a day apart) and she was also helped me with hotels and learning about the area!

Re: Italy in July
My family is from that region so I go there quite often - it is hot, but certainly no unbearable. The sun is stronger than it is here, but not as humid. Our house doesn't have A/C, so I don't know what it feels like to have A/C in Italy! A lot of hotels have shutters on the windows and (for me) the breeze coming off the water is sometimes just enough. FM me if you want more details on other stuff, and have a great time!!!

Re: Italy in July
I was there in July of 01 and in the major cities (Rome, Florence, Venice). It was hot. Very hot. especially in Rome, and humid. If you are on the coast you may not feel it as much though.
Also, true about the AC in hotels...make sure they have it and use it.

Re: Italy in July
I know no A/C in July is rough if it's reallllly hot, but OMG, I stayed there in February (Rome, Sorrento, and Rocella Ionica in Calabria) and it was about 50 during the day, but low 30s at night, and the hotel refused to turn on the heat!!!! brrrrrrr!

Re: Italy in July
I have spent a lot of time in Italy over the past few years (mostly in the summer).
<----- this image is from Chianti!!!
Going to the south in July is hot -- but even Rome is really hot during the summer. If you can't take the heat its better to stay in the north. Cinqueterra (on the northwest coast is just as beautiful as the Amalfi coast and much cooler in the summer).
About AC -- you can get hotels with AC in any major city (they are the higher priced ones usually) and you do have to ask about it. The Italians just have a different way of looking at AC and heat -- electricity is really expensive there so they don't keep it runny all day like we do. I found this especially annoying on public transportation. Like on buses when they don't start it until the bus is moving even if you are sitting there forever (which you always are -- ughhh, don't get me started on buses -- rent a car!)
My advice is -- prepare to spend money on water (its more expensive there than here and don't fall into the trap of having too much wine -- its cheaper than water but you will pass out!!!)
Whatever part of Italy you choose to go to I would recommend sight-seeing and travel in the early morning and evening -- we went to Pompei in the middle of the day and it was like walking on the surface of the sun!!! From 11am - 4pm just stay on the beach!
I went to Calabria, Naples, the Amalfi Coast, and Sicily in July about three years ago and would be happy to give anyone more info on the AMAZINGLY beautiful places I stayed. If you are interested in Capri -- you might want to try the less popular side of the island called Anacapri -- you get a lot more for your money, it is even more breathtaking and more spacious! Don't miss the Grotto Azura -- the most incredible place to swim on earth!!!
Also July is MUCH better than August -- when the entire country goes on vacation. It is impossible to find hotels, public transportation is packed, and there are lines for any major tourist attraction!
If you want any more info FM me! I LOVE helping people in regard to Italy travel.
I've spent a lot of time in Siena (outside Florence) and it is the most wonderful city on the planet -- visit it if you can!
Enjoy!!!!!

I've been to Italy in July many times and it can get very hot!! especially the south coast. Just make sure your hotel has air conditioning and you will be fine.
It's beautiful there that time of year. You'll love it.

Re: Italy in July
For those of you who have been to the Amalfi Coast, do you ever rent a car or take a bus? We are flying into Rome and have to get down to sorrento but don't know how we should do this without having to take 3 different trains.

Thank you so much for all your responses. Anyone who has been there or is planning to go there, where have you stayed?
