for those who have gone... is 3 days in each city (Rome, Florence, Venice) enough? or would you feel rushed? Trying to plan honeymoon :) TIA

Re: italy question
I think it depends on what you like. I am not that much into art so I spent 3 days in Florence and was very happy - there is nothing like standing in front of the statue of David and there are some really fun cooking classes around. I haven't been to Venice but heard that you don't really need more than a good day or two. Rome is just amazing and totally chaotic! I was there 4 days and could have spent more. There is a lot to see there. I used a local tour company called Angel Tours and covered almost everything. Then went to a few places by myself. If you have time check out Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast - its breathtaking.
If you are looking for a place to stay in Rome I was at an awesome bed and breakfast. Its run by an American dentist and his Italian wife. On your first day in he will help get you acquainted with Rome and its literally right off of Piazza Navona. FM me if you have any questions!!!
Def. enough for Florence and Venice. Rome on the other hand is one of the most amazing cities in the world and there is sooooo much to see, especially if you or your FH are into history, art, or churches. The Vatican alone is a full day, I was not too impressed with Florence so unless you are doing side trips from there I would shorten that part of you trip and extend Rome. I travel a lot...FM me if you want more!

Re: italy question
You could do Rome in 3 days but it would not be relaxing AT ALL especially if you want to see everything. Frommer's has some really great sample 1, 2, and 3 day itineraries though on their web-site. We spent 7 days and spread everything out.

Re: italy question
Venice is a little nutty (and expensive), so I think 2-3 days there is TOTALLY fine. Actually, there are other places close to Venice that I would rather visit (like Bologna).
Florence is WONDERFUL. I think 3 days is ok for the major things- it is a very walkable city. Great food, lots of things to do (Churches, marketplaces, gardens, museums, good food!)
Ah, Roma. I lived here for a year studying architecture just off of the Campo De Fiori. I think you could easily spend a week here. There is so much to do, and it is a large city. The pickpockets are good, so I would recommend walking here and staying away from public transportation. If I shifted time, I would take a day from Venice and give it to Rome.
FM me if you have any questions!
We will be travelling here too for our HM (and Spain) and I can't wait!

Re: italy question
FH and I took an Italy trip this past summer. We did Rome for 5 days, Florence for 3 days, and Venice for 2 days.
You really don't need more than 2 days in Venice, there really isn't much to see except the island itself. But definitely worth going to see. I would give your extra day to Rome. There is just so much to see. We spend 1 of the 5 days only at the Vatican City. Rome is big and it was the most exhausting part of the trip because there is just so many things to see.
I was glad I gave 3 days to Florence because it was enough time to see everything we wanted, and have time to shop. The shopping there is excellent. We got most of our clothing/leather there. Tip: bring cash for shopping, everything is negotiable.
I have an itinerary of what we saw on what day. I mapped it out so everything on one day was close to each other. FM me if you want it.
Definitely buy Rick Steves books for each city you visit. He is the BEST TOUR BOOK!!!

Re: italy question
It really depends on what you would like to see. We went to Italy for our HM and spent the majority of our time in Tuscany. We spent 5 day in Florence and then set up a private tour to see some of the other smaller towns (Siena, San Gimignano, Scarperia, etc.). We also went to the Island of Elba and to Cinque Terra. We wanted a mix of the city, the sea and the countryside. We also took cooking lessons in Sesto. I would suggest trying to figure out what sights you would like to see then schedule you trip accordingly.

Re: italy question
We did Italy last July. We were taking a cruise out of Venice, so we arrived in Rome ahead of time. We left JFK on Friday and landed in Rome on Saturday afternoon late (after missing out connection). We pretty much were able to get settled in our hotel and then go for dinner.
We had booked a tour guide - www.romeinlimo.com. I canot rave enough about them. They picked us up at our hotel on Sunday morning and for the next 8 hours we were taken from place to place sightseeing. They explained the history of Rome which traveling around.
On Sunday we did a half day tour of the Vatican - not enough time in my opinion - only did half day because we needed to catch a train to Lucca. On our way to Lucca, we took in the sites of Florence. The tour guide in the Vatican was great! The line to enter the vatican was around the corner. With the guide we went right to the front door and went right inside. The tour guide explained the history of the Vatican which was quite helpful!
We traveled by train from Rome to Florence to Lucca to Venice. If you do decide to use the train, beware of shadey characters. Being from NY, we thought we had nothing to worry about while traveling by train. We learned differently. Watch your belongings. Just keep you eye on everyone around you!
If you need any more details. FM me.

Re: italy question
might need one more day for rome if you want to do it the 'right' way - there is SOOO much to do!
also, if you're going to florence, you might want to look into going to cinque terre for a day or two - it's amazing there! and about an hour from florence/pisa
