ok, here's the whole LONG story!
I'M ENGAGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It happened yesterday, September 23rd, in Princeton, NJ in a courtyard at Princeton University! The story from the beginning follows below.
Todd and I had plans to take a 6:30am sunrise hot air balloon ride in a town outside of Princeton. Todd had made the plans a week earlier, but it was contigent upon the weather. After the balloon ride we planned to hang out in Princeton and then go to dinner. I thought it was just supposed to be a fun day for the two of us certainly not expecting he would propose to me!
We got up at 4:30am yesterday morning in order to catch our balloon ride! I shot out of bed and jumped in the shower, I was so excited to go, I was wide awake! Just as I was almost done getting ready, Todd came in the room to tell me that the balloon people called and had to cancel our ride because it was raining. Nooo!!!! I was pretty bummed out, but we said we'd reschedule. Anyway, since we were already up and dressed we decided to just head down to Princeton anyway and spend the day there since it's such a beautiful place and I'd never been there. Before we hit the road, Todd surprised me by making me a delicious breakfast with omelets and cinnamon crumpets! The breakfast didn't tip me off because he does nice things like this for me all the time! I had NO idea what he had up his sleeve for later in the day!
When we got to Princeton we walked around for about an hour and I started getting cranky cause I was hungry! I'm sure Todd was thinking, 'uh oh she's getting cranky, this will foil my plans!'. So we soon found a nice little restaurant for lunch. During lunch Todd asked the waitress to take a picture of us. I wasn't sure why he wanted a picture because although it was a nice restaurant it wasn't exactly fancy and we weren't dressed all that nice! Anyhoo, I still didn't have a clue. After lunch I started teasing him about the ring I thought he was getting for me. All the while not knowing that it was in his pocket!! Todd suggested that we take a walk onto the Princeton University campus because it's so beautiful and he'd like to relax a little bit. We walked onto the campus and headed toward a courtyard. Todd said, 'why don't we sit down here for a minute?' and I said, 'ok'. As we were sitting there we started chatting about how we'd like to get married and that if we were to get married how we'd need to practice our 'church kiss'. Todd, letting the conversation flow, siezed the moment and said, 'well, we can practice the kiss, but what we can't practice is this...' and as he said that he got down on his knee in front of me. I thought he was tying his shoes or something! I was sooooooo oblivious even then!! He started telling me how much he loves me and all the other mushy gushy stuff I will spare you of! I starting freaking out, I covered my face with my hands, peering at him through my fingers. I kept saying, 'wait, what? Are you serious? Is this really happening? You're doing this now? What are you doing? Oh my god oh my god!' And he actually had to say, 'yes, honey, I'm proposing to you!' Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a little black box. It was all such a blur and so surreal!! Then he said, 'Lauren, will you marry me?' as he opened the box. I was reeling and said 'Of course I will!' Then we started crying and hugging and it was just beautiful. I even stodd up and jumped up and down!
Todd was amazing and so calm! The ring is gorgeous! The event and the timing had me in such shock that I thought I was going to throw up!! Later that night we went to a fancy dinner at a great French restaurant and then drove home to tell our family!
Todd had originally planned to propose on the hot air balloon ride, but when it got cancelled he decided to go to plan B. Plan B was just perfect! And we still get to go on the hot air balloon ride in a couple weeks!
I will post more pics eventually, but I have to say that my hair looks terrible because it was muggy out and it got all frizzy, ugh! And I didn't wear anything special because I thought it was just a pretty regular Saturday! I've always pictured looking my best when I'm proposed to, but I guess that's what the wedding is for!
