Got a call from my doctor with my blood test results and I am now officially pregnant!
I do however, have a few questions. When I first came in she didn't examine me, just had the nurse take blood and said to call in 2 business days for results. She said it was too soon to see anything. I want to be fair though and mention that I was in her office 2x in the last month and she run quite a few blood tests before so she definitely knew that the pregnancy was very recent.
Also, she asked me if I still take Folic Acid, which I do, because I started taking in when we first started to TTC. She said Folic Acid is enough for now and didn't give me any other prenatals to take. When I called for the test results today I spoke to the nurse who said everything looks normal. I asked if they can tell how far along I am when I need to come in for an exam and she said that the doctor didn't say and she needs to ask her. She then called me back and said it's too soon to see how far along I was and to come in 2 weeks. That's it!
So, I wonder, is it normal that she didn't examine me the first time and didn't give me any prenatal beside folic acid I was already taking? Did any of your started taking anything else rigth away? Also, I thought she would be able to tell formt he blood work how long ago the conseption occured, based on the beta levels (?) I am confused!
I know that the office is very, very busy and see pregnant woman all the time, but I just felt like that whole thing should have been more.. I don't know... official, I guess...

Re: It's official! and I have some questions...
That would really bother me...there is no reason why they couldn't tell you how far along you are. They calculate it by when the first day of your last period was....so if you know that you could figure it out. Also, at my first visit not only did they make it official by doing a test..they also did a sonogram. I was just about six weeks....and although you couldn't see much...you could still see the flutter of the heartbeat. FM if you have any other questions....and Congrats again!!

Re: It's official! and I have some questions...
First of all - Congrats! They don't sound too friendly.... I don't know anything about the blood tests, but I would ask for a prenatal prescrip (they also have OTC prenatals too) My office called in a prescrip for me the first time I called them - I had my first visit at 8 weeks and they did a sono (pic below) - there wasn't much to see then. Do you have any idea when conception was?
I am definitely under 6 weeks. Actually, I happen to know exactly the day I conceived! It's along story...
My periods are kind of irregular so it would be hard to tell just by that, I guess...
Thank you ladies

Try it using this calculator When they do the sono they'll be able to tell the due date better - that's how they did it with me - then again they changed the due date with the 2nd sono by 3 days.
ETA - PS - who are you?

First off, Congrats!!!!
Some things sound pretty normal, other things sound a little strange. But that doesn't mean your doctor is wrong. Every doctor does things differently.
I'm not sure that they can tell how far along you are based on blood work. I thought it was always determined based on your last period. My doctor set my due date based on that. So my question to you is how far along do you think you are? My doctor wouldn't see me for the first time until I was about 7-8 weeks. We did a sonogram at that point. She also took some blood and went over the next 9 months with me.
I'm a little surprised about the prenatals because my doctor actually had me on them 3 months before we even started TTC. So I don't understand why your doctor wouldn't put you on them now.
I would wait and see what happens when you go in 2 weeks. If you still feel like things don't seem right you may want to start looking for a new doctor. Again all of them do things differently. But you have to be comfortable with what they are doing.

I have been taking Folic Acid for abotu 4 month now, does that count as anything?

well folic acid is very important but there are other vitamins in the prenatals that you need to increase. So I'm just very surprised that your doctor wouldn't start you on them right away.
3 weeks would be very early to see anything so I'm not surprised that they said they couldn't do a sono.

Re: It's official! and I have some questions...
from what my dr's have told me -- taking folic acid beford and during TTC is best.
It is odd that your Dr wouldnt have given you a prenatal but maybe it would make you feel better if you go get some of the over the counter ones...when I got pregnant I was taking the CVS brand ones and my dr told me to finish them out before I got a prescription.
And 3 weeks is very early for a sono. I went to the drs at 4 weeks pregnant and they only did a test to confirm pregnancy. I had to wait until 6 weeks for the sono.
CONGRATULATIONS!

Re: It's official! and I have some questions...
My sister is preggo and she went to the Dr to confirm and she didn't put her on prenatals either. She just prescribed Folic Acid. She was about 5 weeks at that visit. The Dr. calculated it by the first day of her last period.

Re: It's official! and I have some questions...
I know both times the doctors would not even see me until I was 6 weeks. The first time they didn't even do a sonogram, this time they did. They did warn me though at 6 weeks there is a chance that you might not see anything and that could be upsetting. I also know my friends ob-gyn will not do internals the first trimester so I think that it depends on the doctor
Congratulations and best wishes for a happy and healthy nine months!!

Re: It's official! and I have some questions...
I am someone who thinks that it is better not to mess with anything 'down there' during the first few weeks anyway. You are newly pregnant. Let things settle. No need for an internal exam. There is nothing to see, so why mess with it. I have NEVER heard of a girl not being put on prenatals. Most even go one them while TTC. I used GNC prenatals my whole pregnany and loved them. You can get them without an Rx. You may want to consider finding a new practice if you are not super comfortable and happy with the current one. You will be with these doctors often and you need to feel that you are being treated properly.

Re: It's official! and I have some questions...
I also go to a pretty large practice with many, many pregnant women being seen. But the day I got a positive PG test, I called them and they told me that I could come in and they would confirm it (which they did) - I was 4 weeks at that time. They all use the same 'chart' at first to determine due date, etc. by using the date of your LMP - I don't see why they could not do that for you. Of course that that could change once you have your 1st sonogram, which should be at about 8-10 weeks depending on your dr. office. But if you know your conception date, then you could figure it out for yourself easily - there are tons of charts on the internet. Also, they did prescribe prenatal vitamins for me on that day - I too had been taking Folic Acid while TTC. They then scheduled my 1st 'official' appointment for when I was 8 weeks along. So, basically, they just confirmed that I was PG, no exams, no bloodwork, nothing else at that time....I don't think that is too unusual. COngrats to you and GOOD LUCK!

Re: It's official! and I have some questions...
I did not get my prenatal Rx or an internal exam until I was 8 weeks. The doc just said to take folic acid and my Centrum vitamins. I was only 3 weeks preggo when I found out. I also did not have a sonogram until 20 weeks. It depends on your doctor's office, and what your insurance will cover. My insurance didn't cover it before then, unless there was a problem. It sounds like you are only a couple of weeks preggo, so at your 8 week exam, you will prob. get those things. But, like other people said, you can start taking OTC prenatals- they can't hurt you.

Thank you, ladies for your advice and congratulations!
All of you who are just dying to know who I am are gonna have to wait just a little longer!!
I will give you a little hint though:
I used to be a regular poster on these boards while panning my wedding and for about a year after! I don't post that often anymore, but I am still around!

Re: It's official! and I have some questions...
I would start taking prenatals any brand. As long as you eat healthy Folic Acid is the most important thing..
The sono thing is true to early can be really scary if nothing is there that is what happened to me. They told me it may be ectopic and i cryed for 4 days until my f/u sono when the bean showed up.
Congrats you may want to switch if you are not comfortable...
