What a turn of events! I never in my life ever thought we would end up going to Puerto Rico after all this back and forth lol...but given the time frame we had to work with, it just made the most sense logistically, and the weather there is nice in December, and all we wanted was a nice beach, so there we go!
Staying 4 days/3 nights at the Ritz Carlton on Isla Vedra Beach in the Carolina district of San Juan...I can't wait to just relax! We might go one day in to Old San Juan, but might just stay in the hotel area too since we don't have tooooooo much time. Has anyone been and can give any recommendations of what to do and what to skip?

I've been there!! We spent 3 days there before going on a crusie. We went into old san juan one night.
i lvoe the coqui... the lil froggies!! they r my favorite!

I have been there 3 times and am a huuuggge fan. great service! amazinggg foooddddd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 minute drive from airport. room beds and bathroom are to die for its a perfect place for a minimoon, quick flight, such a relaxing pool!!!! yeah congrats!!

I loved Puerto Rico. There is a really nice restaurant in one of the squares by the fort. Only the locals go to it. Can't recall the name of it. If it comes to me I'll post again. Don't go to the Bacardi Rum Distillery. It was lame. Not worth the free drink. The best thing to do in Puerto Rico is see the bioluminescent bay. We went to the one in Vieques. It was amazing. You can check the lunar calendar to see what phase the moon will be in to see if you will have good visibility. If you can visit Vieques - need to take a puddle jumper or ferry - do it. The island was beautiful. Lots of deserted beaches that you have all to yourself.
El Yunque was nice. El Morro is pretty too. We didn't go on any tours. Not sure about the caverns...got a flat on the way there and didn't get a chance to go. HTH's!
The Ritz is ABSOLUTELY the right choice over there.... that pool area is to die for

I LOVE it in Puerto Rico - one of me and FH best vacations. Def. eat in IlMulino in the Ritz ---- soooo good! I mean you will never experience italian food and service like this. From the moment you sit down, they come over with a block of parmesan cheese and break off a piece for you, the fresh garlic bread is delicious and then they usually have a compliments of the chef item like bruschetta with a mussel or something like that. You get all that complimentary and don't even really need an appetizer. There a lot of veal dishes - the veal is sooooo good. There is one in Manhattan - can't get reservations like ever. So we always go when we are in Atlantic City.
There is also a Palm in the El San Juan, which is a couple hotels down if you want a good steak.

I've been there twice and loved it! I do like to do the tour thing - I loved El Yunque (the rainforest) and Iove to visit the castle (El morro) - I would also suggest the biluminesce bay - just be careful because it's at night (that's part of why it's cool) but for me at least we took kyaks and it was hard work - FH and I did not fair well :-P

I second that! The El San Juan hotel was AWESOME!!!! LOVE the pool! Our next trip is the Ritz and then we are going to do the El San Juan again.

I HIGHLY recommend 'night kayaking in a bioluminesent bay'!! It is really AMAZING. We did it as an excursion in Puerto Rico when we were on a cruise. FM me if you want more info.
