Its on Ebay!! It didn't sell!

I've been trying to sell one of my BM's dresses. My FSIL had a baby and lost a lot of weight and now needs a size 6 (we had ordered a 12) and the seamstress said she can't alter it that much. So, I tried selling it though here and also theknot and weddingchannel. My next idea is EBAY - I've been reading the 'user agreement' and trying to figure it out. Has anyone sold through ebay before? Can you give me tips and tell me how much it costs. It appears that they hide a lot of costs. Thanks for your help!!

Re: Help with Ebay!!

I sell stuff on Ebay all the time. The costs are not very high, and they don't hide them. When you go through the seller registration and the seller forms to sell an item, each fee is itemized. It's usually only a few dollars for the posting and any extras (bold titles, gift signs, etc.). Then, it's a small percentage of the cost of the item I think, if you use paypal. Make sure to put your title in all capital letters, don't bother spending money on bolding it though. Let me know if you need more help....but first try to set it up yourself-you'll find it's not too hard. I can look at it after you set it up and give you tips (you can edit parts of it even once it's posted).

Okay - I'm registering right now - do I use PayPal to accept payments? Also, how do I estimate shipping costs?

Re: Its on Ebay!!

noooooo that must have cost you a fortune to start that listing at $85

Always start is at $9.99, put your reserve price & as well, list the reserve price in the auction listing description also, so people know to bid at the price you want or close to it.

I didn't know that - can I change it?? I'm going to try right now - thanks Jenn!

Okay, I just went and read the details again. The 'reserve price' that I set is what I pay for and gives me the option to not sell if it is not met. The 'starting bid' they suggest you put low so as not to discourage buyers but there is no fee. So, I lowered it to $50.

I'm new at this Ebay stuff! Its really for my BM, she paid for the dress and I feel bad that now she may have to pay for two and I'm trying to help her. She has a baby and never gets the time to go on Ebay.

starting price of $50 - you're probably not going to get any bids. If your reserve is set where you want, then lower your starting price to some insanely low $ - like $9.99 - that way you'll get early bidders who want a deal but hang in for the long run. You're also OK because if you don't make it to the reserve you're not required to sell.

start it at 9.99!

ebay

Start at 19.99 or so, that's true. Also, you don't have to estimate shipping if you don't want to, esp. since you don't know where you'll have to send it.

Thanks everyone - I'll change it - I have no idea how Ebay works!!

Re: Its on Ebay!!

The insertion fee is based on the reserve price, not the opening value in a reserve auction, so the initial fee is the same either way. Changing from a starting price of $85 and moving to a starting price of $20 with a reserve of $85 will cost her more if the item is not sold -- she'll be hit with the Additional Reserve Price Auction fee of $1.00

Link to Listing of all Fees!

Single Quantity, Online Auction Listings
The Insertion Fee is based on the starting price for your item.

Reserve Price Auction Listings
The Insertion Fee is based on the reserve price of the item you list for sale.
When you list a Reserve Price Auction, you will also be charged a Reserve Price Auction Fee, which is also based upon the reserve price. Reserve Price Auction Fees are fully refundable. At the end of the auction, if your item sells, the Reserve Price Auction Fee is refunded to your account. This also applies to Real Estate.

Starting Price,
Opening Value or
Reserve Price Insertion Fee

$0.01 - $9.99 $0.30
$10.00 - $24.99 $0.55
$25.00 - $49.99 $1.10
$50.00 - $199.99 $2.20
$200.00 and up $3.30

There is still good reason to change to a reserve auction as explained. You are likely to generate additional interest. But I just wanted to let you know that it isn't cheaper as stated above.
