My good friend has one. It stays in for 10 years, but sometimes you can become pregnant and the fetus can become intwined in the IUD. This is VERY rare, but I've heard of that happening. My friend did it after she was done having all of her babies.
They had stopped offering IUD's for a long time. They have come out with a new one that doesn't stay in as long and is said to be quite effective. You should talk to your gyno about it and the other options.
My cousin's wife had it put in. Not to scare you, but she ended up in the hospital for a few days because her body rejected it and she got really sick.
My friend had one put in too........they are plastic now, they used to be metal. I guess they are pretty safe and are quite effective.
