Ive been a victim of a scam...kind of long

Ok here's my story, a couple of weeks ago I receive a mail indicating that I have won a sweepstake( 3rd prize winning of $120,000 thousand dollars). I immediately called FH and told him about, he implied that we will talk about it later since he's at work, ok fine. Like he said we talk about it when he came home and I decided not to look into it, but he insist that I call; so the next day I did, I spoke to this lady and she confirm that I have won $120,000( WHAT $120,000) ok that's freaking awesome, so I started asking her questions and all her answers were satifactory to me. Ok here's the catch, they sent me a check for $1,997 and asked me to cash it then send it via moneygram back to them to cover taxes and fees so I did (stupid I know) but i was sold, she made it sound so real, I think im not the only idiot that was taken away by this offer.

So today I went online to my account and realize that my account was missing $1,997 after I have taken out $1,997 a couple of days ago to send out too them. OK WHAT THE HELL. I imediatelly called my bank and they told me that the check i have deposit was cleared but returned back to me, OK, AGAIN WHAT THE HELL, how can a bank clear a check without validating the check first, this *** on the phone indicated that the bank is only allow to hold a check for a length of time before they release the funds without validating the check, after hearing that I really felt like an IDIOT.

So to make a long story short, Im crying my eyes out because I have been taken for a ride I just lost $2,000 and I want it back. What hurts me the most I really didn't believe that they are people out there that would do this to me and WHY ME? to make it worst my mom calls me while im crying and ask me why im crying and I cant even that her anything because she will be like 'ARE YOU THAT STUPID, you don't have anything better to do with $2000 then to give it away' mind you I still have alot of vendors to payoff.

The bad thing is Im still crying I CANT BELIEVE.
sry, long but I had to share, please lady's be aware, don't be a greed like I was.

I am soooo sorry this happened to you. Its so sad to think there are people out there that would go so low. Is there anything your bank can do?? Someone has to be able to do something!!!!

I'm so sorry, I can't believe the nerve of people to pull scams like that. Unfortunately its the honest people who get hurt.

Oh my goodness...I am so sorry. Did you speak to the bank about this? There should be something you can do. I don;t know maybe a police report or something.

This happened to FH. Similar story but not the exact same. A person purchase an $600 poker table from my FH (he builds them start to finish and sells them, mostly through Ebay) He got the same type of check in the mail but it was for $1000 and same thing happened. They wanted him to deposit it etc...the whole money gram thing you described but luckily he thought it was a scam from the beginning and he reported it. I'm sorry you're going through this. Hopefully it will work out for you. good luck!

I used to work for the Federal Trade Commission in DC - you should report this immediately to the FTC (www.ftc.gov) and the NY state Attorney General's office (if you are in NY, if not, then in the state you live in). Give them as much information as you possibly can - phone numbers, the woman's name, the numbers on the check, anything you can think of. Phone numbers are especially important for tracing scammers to their actual headquarters (usually, unfortunately, somebody's basement or something) Also call your local police department - the FTC has been training local PD's in how to handle identity theft and other scams. If there is any chance these people could have your bank account number, talk to your bank about changing it.

You're right - you're not the only person who has fallen for this or something similar. If enough people complain to state and federal gov't authorities, they can get these guys and get you some of your hard earned money back. Don't feel like an idiot. I'm so sorry this happened to you - now go fight back!!!

ETA: Whoops - didn't see you already contacted the FTC.

They have scams like that all the time unfortunately. Some are done saying you won some kind of UK lottery. Honestly you should never send anyone money if you supposedly won money. So sorry they did this to you. I hope your bank can do something for you.

I am sooo sorry. I actually got the same thing... Some letter from Canada Lotto saying you won 120,000.00. My check that I was supposed to cash was for 2,500.00. I did call the company but when the lady told me I had to cash the check and all the other details, I ripped it up and through it away. Believe me I was really close to cashing it, but FH kept saying it was false. So, i didn't do it... What did the bank say is there anything you could do or call the lotto people back?

omg i am so sorry!! my coworker was just in similar scam just recently!!

they sent her $3000 in travelers checks and when she deposited, the bank called her to say that it was a fradulant check.
the company said to cash it first and then fill out the paper work.

it seems nowadays scams have really advanced. they now send you actual checks...

so sorry!!!
