jenniesunshine......Japanese Straghtening

is great if you understand that eventually you will be obligated to blow it out everyday until it growns in. I got it done in Nov 03 and I still have 2 inches to go! Hopefully, before my June wedding. The edges are so straight they are frizzy and I can't even throw it back into a pony without it sticking up every which way. It did look great when I first got it done(have pics if you want) but now I wish that I hadn't done it. I want my curls back! It was fun but just in the beginning when I 'needed a change'. Also, I shed like crazy now. Just some thoughts on it.

One of my best friends is a Hair dresser and does the Japanese Straightening ALL the time. She make a fortune doing them but when I told her I might want it she begged me to reconsider. She said in the end those chemicals really do a number on your hair and its a PITA when it starts to grow out ( worse then getting your roots touched up all the time) lol

I get the magic straight done in a little rinky dink koren place in queens for $350 and I don't think I could live without it. I manage to go about 7 or 8 month. I've done it four times now and haven't seen any damage at all. The only thing I hate is the actual process. My hair is kinda long and sometimes I sit in that place for 8 hours!!!

8 hours! I wouldn't be able to stand it.

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! I definitely don't have the patience to sit and blow dry my hair everyday. My hair is really thick and long now (past the middle of my back) so my arms get tired after like 5 minutes--it's quite a workout!

yes, I have very thick, curly, 'italian' hair. No matter how much flat ironing and hairblowing I did I could never get it straight enough or make it stay it that way. Now I don't even have to blow dry it. I can't believe it's even my hair!!!! As far as the eight hour 'procedure' while I'm getting it done I SWARE I'll never do it again but seven months later I'm there again! It's is so worth it

i'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing, but i know there's this 'japanese straightening' thing out there that supposedly wouldn't damage your hair. (i'll try to find out the exact name from my friends in english tomorrow.)

i never did it myself as my hair is flat out straight, but a few of my friends did it and it does make your hair REALLY straight. no damage is seen and they've had it for quite awhile and done it quite a few times. i believe no daily blow-drying is needed. all you have to do is to leave your hair alone for 1 or 2 days after you get it done - no washing, no tying it up or anything, just leave it alone.

my friends who have had it done are asian, so i don't know how it would work on other hair types. but i can try to find out if you girls want.

oh, the process will take quite a few hours though from what i heard!

The process is called Thermal Reconditioning or TR. I had this process done exactly a year ago. (It was my Christmas gift to myself last year.) My hair is still straight except for the portion that grew in. At first I used to just flat iron my roots. Now it is a bit longer that I pull it half up or into a pony tail. There is a good article at the following URL:
http://www.lamasbeauty.com/beauty/july02/Thermal_Reconditioning.htm

The site above has a really good chat forum about the process.

My hair is about an inch shorter than where my elbows are. Last year, I had done it at this place called KSY in Manhattan after reading a ton of reviews. I had gone in at 10 in the morning and got out at 7 at night. It is very expensive. I had it done by a guy named Jason. http://www.kimsunyoungny.com/thermal.htm

How did it look? It looked great. And my hair is still thin except for the part that grew in. The only reason I did not go back and get it done again is cause it is on the pricey side. My hair is so shiney and healthy. I still have no regrets I did it. I have seen no hair loss more than usual. My hair is just thinner cause it is straight.

Hope this helps.
