Jewish Brides

What are the rules for who can sign the Ketubah?
TIA

Re: Jewish Brides

It really depends on your rabbi.

For us, we had an ultra orthodox ceremony (we are not orthodox!) Our rabbi told us, that it could not be someone related to us, and that we also could only have someone that was Shabbat Observant sign the ketubah. We did fib a little because DH really wanted a good friend of his to sign it. He's somewhat religious is keeps the Sabbath in his own way. We didn't tell the Rabbi otherwise

1. The witnesses should be Jewish and unrelated to you.

If you rabbi is very traditional he/she may also require that they be male.

I forgot that part. We couldn't have a female sign the ketubah

If you have an interfaith ketubah, any witness might be able to sign it. Talk to your Rabbi.

We are getting married by a Cantor - Interfaith. He told us we had to have two jewish witness's, non related.

Our Rabbi let the BM (DH's brother), who isn't Jewish, sign it. I guess it depends on the officiant.

So you are Jewish, FH is not? We have an interfaith ceremony (in our case, FH is Jewish and I'm Catholic) and he told us we needed to have two jewish witnesses sign it who are not related. Fh wants to let two of his GM (who are Jewish) sign it.

Yes. Our Rabbi is pretty liberal so he let us choose whomever we wanted to sign the ketubah. At first, I thought the witnesses needed to be Jewish and not related to us, but our Rabbi said it didn't matter. It's totally up to your officiant.

I will have to ask our Cantor if he could bend the rules. We don't know anyone who is Jewish and non-related.

Re: Jewish Brides

traditionally, it's supposed to be 2 males who are jewish and not related to you.

for liberal jews, you can have males or females sign that are jewish and unrelated to you.

if you want more than 2 witnesses and you get your ketubah made with additional witness lines, you can have more people sign that are related or not related to you. but your 2 main witnesses must be jewish and not family.

you can have your non-jewish witnesses sign your civil document.

remember, even tho it is not a binding legal document anymore, the ketubah is still a jewish tradition and should be respected. you would not ask a jewish friend to take sacrements at your catholic/christian wedding mass...

it's all about respecting people's traditions.

just my 2 cents from your board Cantor!!

The two non-related people are not supposed to be related by blood OR marriage. We were married by a reform rabbi and both of our witnesses were female. It really depends on the Rabbi.
