Jewish Brides and Fiddler on the Roof

Jewish Brides and Fiddler on the Roof

Is playing Fiddler a requirement?

I like Fiddler, but I actually hate the 2 songs people play at weddings, Sunrise, Sunset and L'Chaim. L'Chaim esp bothers me b/c in the musical, it's sung about a wedding that never happens.

Anyone play anything?

They won't be playing either of those if I have any say. If you don't want to hear them, don't do it, it's not required by any means.

I don't mean a requirement in a literal sense. It just seems like everyone has them and everyone expects it. i think there are MUCH more beautful and appropriate songs from Fiddler anyway..I love 'miracle of miracles' and 'now I have everything' but since when are we required to play showtunes?

I really do love 'Sunrise, Sunset'. It wasn't played at my wedding, but I love the whole score to 'Fiddler'.

as long as you have the horah, you're all set!

no fiddler required!

ha, I hadn't even thought about playing Fiddler...

Truthfully, I really just don't love Fiddler... and Sunrise, Sunset always seemed kind of depressing to me.

I love theater, and I'm definitley thinking about playing a few showtunes here and there, but probably not Fiddler. I'm thinking of 'All I Ask of You' from Phantom of the Opera for some point during the ceremony, or one of the special reception songs... I think the lyrics are so beautiful and meaningful.

I figure if I don't like it, I won't play it!

We didn't have any Fiddler at mine. Although, my MIL tried to tell me that 'every Jewish bride and groom enter the reception to Sunrise, Sunset'

Definatly not required! THe hora is the only required song

My DH did dance to Sunrise, Sunset with his mom, but definatly not a requirement.

Actually, I always thought the horah is a dance and not a song.

As far as I know, songs from Fiddler are not requirements. As far as I am concerned, they are a little cliche. It is customary to sing 'Siman Tov U Mazal Tov' after the glass is stepped on and the bride and groom kiss and start the recessional. Then at the reception, the horah songs are usually 'Heveinu Shalom Aleichem' and 'Hava Negila'. Thats my plan!

True! I was mixing up the two... My DJ had a 'hora medly'!

Not required. We had a medley for the Hora and DH danced with his mom to Sunrise Sunset...her choice.

My dad INSISTED that sunrise sunset be the father daughter song at my sister's wedding.
I have to tell you, I am soooo dreading the possibility that he might insist on it for me! I keep trying to tell him that I want something special for us, but sadly, I know he will win!

I'm under the impression that Fiddler on the Roof was written some time after the Torah, the Talmud, and Halachic law in general, so I don't believe there's any sort of requirement.

None of it was played at our wedding.

I didn't play any songs from Fiddler and no one asked (not even my mother -- and she didn't seem to expect it).

If you it isn't your thing than don't bother.

I didn't have these songs at my wedding- in fact I have only heard Sunrise Sunset played during the father-daughter dance. I don't think you need either song. Just the horah.

ETS: we had some Israeli music (modern stuff) since DH is Israeli and so is my family.

His mom was insisting on Sunrise, Sunset for ther Mother/Son dance. I was insisting no. I don't know why, but that song is like nails on a chalboard for me. We're eliminating parents dances for various reasons. I'm glad I don't have to do the hora to 'l'chaim' it seems like EVERY wedding I go to has that

This is odd, I've never heard them at any Jewish wedding I've been to. My mom wants to hear Sunrise, Sunset but maybe she'll forget by September.

Maybe FH's family is just weird. They do things that they like, insist are traditional and they're just weird. But I have heard from other people that Fiddler is, like, a requirement. I'm glad I'm not the only person who's not into it!

Hey, I'm doing the Mezinka dance for our parents. That's enough!
