Jewish Brides - Ketubah; Catholic Brides - Catholic Marriage License
Hey girls!
L'Shana Tova to all! I have a quick question. My fiance and I are getting married at the RH (Jericho Terrace). We have either a friend marrying us or a Justice of the Peace (we're undecided right now). Well we are going to have a Ketubah and I have my 2 cousins as my witnesses but I was wondering, how do we get the Ketubah signed? A rabbi needs to sign it right? So can we do that like the week of the wedding or do we have to wait until after the wedding? I was hoping to have it signed at the wedding to show it to everyone and my cousins are from out of state so we are hoping to have them there to sign as witnesses. Has this happened to anyone? Can ANYONE help us out?
Also, for the Catholic Brides. Since we are getting married at the RH and not by a priest, my FH would still like a Catholic Marriage License. Does anyone know how this works? I'm going to be able to open a marriage license store at the end of this wedding but if we have 1 we have to have both, of course. How can we get the priest to give us a Catholic Marriage License without him marrying us. My parents did this 100 years ago and they just had to get a dispansation from the cardinal but we don't know if that still applies. And also, can we do this before the wedding or do we have to do it after?
Thanks girls! ENJOY THE WEEKEND! It's supposed to be GORGEOUS!!!!
I can ans the Catholic part of your question. If you are getting married at the RH the Catholic Church wont recongize it. So he wont be able to get a 'Catholic License'. According the to Church you have to be married on consecrated grounds which is the Church for it to be recongized. Sorry
The rule about getting married in church only applies to two catholics. When the couple is interfaith, they can get dispensation to get married in another suitable location, however outdoor weddings are usually not permitted. HTH
I can answer the Ketubah question for you. You usually sign it right before your ceremony in the bridal suite, if you are seeing the groom before the ceremony. I have been to weddings where they do it right before and then the rabbi takes the ketubah and shows it and explains it at the ceremony. I have also been to a wedding where they didnt want to see eachother before hand, so they displayed it unsigned and then did it right afterwards.
You need two witnessess that are not family. So, unfortunately you wont be able to use your cousins. But if you have Jewish friends, or close family friends.
I think the ketubah signing is the best part. Its so intimate and special and its just youre parents and wedding party there!
Yes, I normally agree with the non-family witnesses as your ketubah signers but back before I knew anything about Jewish weddings, I actually signed my cousin's ketubah (interfaith wedding) so I think it can be done--just not really supposed to. I don't know why I was able to but it is possible.
I guess it's changed since my parents got married because they got married at the RH and still got a Catholic Marriage License. Thanks for your help.
seeing your question and answers brought back to mind my folks marriage. yes things have changed. Dad was protestant, Mom Catholic. back in 1948 they wanted to get married in the CATHOLIC church. well a 'mixed marriage' back then - - they could get married by a priest BUT NOT IN the church!! - - they were married by the priest in the rectory.
