Have you ever heard of a Jewish bride having a unity candle? I just assumed everyone has this, but my mom said no. I also wanted to light a memory candle for my deceased father, and my mom said that Jews don't do that either. Can anyone help me?

Re: JEWISH BRIDES-Question...
As far as I know, there is no unity candle. Our tradition is having the groom step on the glass. I don't think the memory candle is there either, though for that one I'm not sure about. I've seen people be remembered mainly on the programs, listing their names and saying 'in memory of...'

Re: JEWISH BRIDES-Question...
I am Jewish, and my DH is Catholic, and we got married in a reform Jewish ceremony. We lit a candle for my DH's mom.

Re: JEWISH BRIDES-Question...
I have seen a Jewish bride use a unity candle in a mixed marraige, but never in a fully Jewish ceremony, nor have I ever seen a memory candle lit. Doesn't mean it's never done though - that's just my experience.

Re: JEWISH BRIDES-Question...
They do not use a Untiy candle at the wedding. However, my rabbi told me they can say a prayer (Kaddish) for the deceased before the ceromony in another room with immediate family, but I thought this was too morbid, and depressing. So, I know u are not supposed to do it, but I am going to place my throw away bouquet at my Mom and Dads grave site, I am going to sneak it into the bush, and I am also going to put an invite at there grave sneaking it into the bush also.. Usually when they see it for something like that they leave it for a few days. It is a no no in the religion, but it would make me happy, becuase they will only be with me in spirit on my wedding day. Plus I am using my Moms hanky from her wedding day around my bouquet, and at the auf ruf, FH is going to wear my dads tallis- we finally found it.

Re: JEWISH BRIDES-Question...
I just went to a jewish wedding where they lit the unity candle. I thought it was a beautiful symbol and will do it at my wedding too!

Re: JEWISH BRIDES-Question...
traditionally, you are not supposed to mention anything sad during a wedding ceremony or even that day! Therefor, no memory candle of Kadish on the wedding day! But i think mentioning a loved one who passed away in the program in a really good idea. My rabbi also mentioned my granddfather during the ceremony, but no Kaddish!
There are no unity candles in a jewish ceremony!
