Jewish Brides - Rehearsal dinner?

Re: Jewish Brides - Rehearsal dinner?

I'm having a rehearsal dinner, hosted by my Italian/Catholic FIL's. My family isn't overly religious so it will not be Kosher, it's actually at a local Italian restaurant. Even though my FIL's are footing the bill, my FH and I are doing the planning. I think it's going to be about $30-35 a person for a family-style meal, beer and wine. I really like the idea of a rehearsal dinner. It gives you more time to spend with the people you're closest to.
However, the actual rehearsal will be the afternoon of the wedding.

FH and I are both Jewish...but we are not doing a traditional RD. We will gather any OOT guests who want to come...and we are going to the Chinese buffet. We will spring for the bill. All Jewish people like Chinese food, right? LOL.

Are you even having a rehearsal?

No...I don't think so. We don't have a bridal party...just MOH and BM and FG. I think we can just run through it the day of. We've all seen how it works on TV..LOL.

We are doing a late lunch early dinner the day b4 the wedding at a Chinese restaurant. We are going to do a quick run threw the day of the wedding. We are paying for it ourselves- the wedding and the day b4 luncheon..... do we need to have a cake , I was thinking cookies or something or do u think it is overkill? Maybe I should stick with the usual jello lump or scoop of ice cream?

No, traditionally, Jews don't have rehearsal dinners because you shouldn't rehearse for life. We're not having one. We may have a day before party for the BMs and GMs.

If you're not having a rehersal, are you having an auruf and an oneg Shabbat afterwards then? My parents-in-law would sponsor one, I'm certain.

In my experience, you never do a wedding rehersal at the rehersal dinner. That you do 30 minutes before the guests arrive.

As for us, we really don;t have $$ for it, and can't ask FH's family to host since they are flying in from Israel.

What we are doing is a 'modified' Henna which is a sephardic/ morrocan tradition. sometimes they are bigger then teh wedding. But since we have no $$ and we are not morrocan, what we are doing is inviting our friends and close family to a morroccan lounge on Sat. night (our wedding is Sunday night) where we will do the henna tradition (the bride puts hennah on her hands and put some in the palm of all the single people). That way, people can eat and drink if they want and pay for themselves.

We just want everyone to be together. We can't afford a sit down dinner. My girlfriend invited all her friends to a bar the night before her wedding and it was so fun. I thought this would put a cultural spin on it.

No rehearsal dinner for us - not really a Jewish thing - but we will prob. meet the main out of town guests the night before...We went for Chinese food the night before my sister's - my parents booked a back room and ordered prior to the event so it was family style...a good chance for everyone to see each other before.
My FH only eats like 4 things, so Chinese will be out of the question!

No RD but probably an auf-ruf although FH is not happy about it. He will do it for his Dad. I am hoping we can have it a few weeks before weding and not weekend of. Too much!

LOL yes I can attest to that. I love chinese food ! We are also Jewish and are going to do a get together for the OOT guests.

No rehearsal dinner for us. What we are doing is having the auf-ruf the Saturday before our sunday wedding, instead of the week before. That way, our out of town family can attend and we will see them all that day. That night, all I want to be doing is packing for my honeymoon!!

Those of you who are technically not having a rehearsal dinner - but a GTG for OOT guests - are you inviting your bridal party so it sort of combines both?

I am not sure about the Bridal Party. I will have to think about that.

We only have a MOH and BM so we are inviting the bridal party. We will also probably invite some very close relatives that live local...so everyone can see each other and spend some time with the OOT guests.

Us too! Actually we may split it up so that my FH will go out to dinner with his out-of-town family (his parents will take care of it), and I'll go out seperately with mine (my parents will take care of it) or something along those lines, we haven't fully figured it out just yet.
