I think it's usually a light bulb. Original not the fluorescents, no one likes Mercury!

it could be either way. the RH can supply some glass to break. usually its best to bring ur own as u will be sure that he can break it and wont hurt his foot
best for that are light bulbs. they also make that pop sound which is very cool and adds special effects to the whole thing

yes - i've heard bad things about the light bulb (that it shatters all over and moves around when you try to step on it), i bought the 'official' jewish wedding glass in a bag on ebay - you can use it as a keepsake after

i bought one on amazon ... i think it was about $30 and includes the pouch and the glass itself.

please do not use a regular glass as these will often break badly and possibly even stab your FH in the foot!

Any Judaica store will carry the 'special glass' to break. It is designed so that it will shatter easily and the glass will not go through FH (DH)'s shoe!

I have heard that lightbulbs are really messy and a regular water glass can cut through the shoe.

We got a special glass at a Judaica store. It cost $30 and is hand blown.

It also comes with a bag to break it and 'store' it. We plan on using the shards after in a picture fram or mezuzah.

Hope this helps.

I got the exact same thing. There was a Judica store on my block! I love that you can keep the shards..what a great idea about Mezuzah!

I'm just wondering, does anyone actually know why we break the glass? (I have an idea, but wondering what you think...)

(Previous poster, how do you put the glass in a mezuzah?)

There are many reasons for breaking the glass, and many interpretations.

I think the most common is that even in times of joy you should remember that there can be sorrow (basically we should not get so overly carried away as to forget ourselves)....I basically see it as your marriage can be as fragile as a piece of glass. Treat it with the up most respect.

Also it is said to represent the destruction of the first temple.

And as far as the mezuzah is concerned. I ASSUME you can buy a kit if you want. But we plan on sending our shards out through the judaica shop and having SOMETHIG made. They also have a process where you can get the glass sorta put back together, in a clear block (like they do at Disney where they can put your profile or head in a clear block).

I'm not Jewish but I think I remember an Ex telling me it's actually a light bulb because it makes a better popping sound... I would get some cheap glasses from Ikea and test it out and compare it to a light bulb

Regarding the mezuzah, Gracie, that's cool.

I heard the reason about the temple which you mentioned: That even at a joyous occasion, we should remember that we're still in exile without our temple. I have a book for my 2 year old called 'I go to a Wedding,' and there's a part that reads: 'Even at a special time like this, we remember the bais hamikdash (temple) we miss. That's why we suddenly hear a smash. The chosson (groom) steps on the glass with a crash.'

At our wedding, we used a small narrow lightbulb, not a regular lighbulb, wrapped in fabric. It made the perfect pop/crashing sound.

A cute reason the rabbi gave us was that they hope our marriage lasts longer than it would take everyone at the wedding to put the glass back together.

My rabbi said that a lightbulb was fine if we didn't want to buy a glass from Judaica store.

My dad got remarried a few years ago, and as a gift, someone gave him a glass (looked like a colored champagne flute without a stem) and she took it after the ceremony and got it set it glass, something like this:

My mom bought us the glass for the shower...it comes with a special bag to hold all the shards in and then we send it back to the company and they put it in the stem of a kiddush cup for us. I am so excited!!
