The rabbi offered to do it in June for us even though we are getting married in August for time reasons. I think it is when DF gets called up to the bimah to be honored by the rabbi. DF may have to say a few prayers but I am not sure.

So, there's no planning involved, right??!! By planning I mean food, invites, party, etc...

It is done for you and your husband. My brother's was a few weeks before his wedding. The Rabbi called them both up to the Bimah and said a prayer over them - then everyone in the audience throws wrapped candy at them (to signify a sweet life)! It is very nice :)

I'd love to have one--but would I do it instead of a rehearsal dinner? I don't want to have too many events that make our friends feel obligated.

Also, is it true that only Isrealites have one (and a Levi or a Cohen would not)??? I heard that once.

We are having one a couple of weeks before the wedding. We plan on having a small dinner afterward with just our immediate families.
