There is a book on interfaith ceremonies for jewish/catholic ceremonies written by a rabbi. It has a few different interpretations in there that are good. (I have the name of the book at home.) I borrowed it from the library. Maybe if you go to your library, they will have books on it. If you need the name of this one, let me know and I will look when I get home tonight.

There is a book you should buy before you plan your ceremony that will help you GREATLY. It's called Celebrating Interfaith Marriages - Creating Your Jewish/Christian Ceremony. It's has explanations for everything...from a lot of different faiths.

Here's one explanation but there are MANY:

The Breaking Of Glass(Jewish Tradition)

'The breaking of the glass at the end of a wedding ceremony serves to remind of two very important aspects of a marriage. The bride and groom - and everyone - should consider these marriage vows as an irrevocable act - just as permanent and final as the breaking of this glass is unchangeable. But the breaking of the glass also is a warning of the frailty of a marriage. That sometimes a single thoughtless act, breech of trust, or infidelity can damage a marriage in ways that are very difficult to undo - just as it would be so difficult to undo the breaking of this glass. Knowing that this marriage is permanent, the bride and groom should strive to show each other the love and respect befitting their spouse and love of their life.'

The Glass is a reminder that even in the happiest times , We still recall the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem. The pieces of the broken glass will be saved and made into a kiddush cup for ___________&_________!

How is this, or you can go to the book store and look in the Jewish Wedding books and they have explanations in there!

Good Luck with everything!!!!!!!!

Misty, that's one of my favorite explanations for the glass breaking!

Also, There's an extra 'superstition' that says that the number of shards the glass breaks into is how many years the marriage will last - so make sure he breaks it but good!

The meaning of breaking the glass is this:

A jewish tradition that represents the distruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. Some say that the custom is pure superstition, an attempt to scare evil spirits away. Many times the couple saves the piece of glass from the ceremony in a symbolic box. This also signifies the end of the ceremony.

How bout just saying: Breaking of the glass is a symbolic tradition which signifies the end of the ceremony which is sealed with a kiss. We encourage all of you to join together and give a big Malzel Tov! for the new Mr & Mrs.. _______ (something along those lines)

That's the explanation my Cantor used! Then he told my DH to 'give it a good shot because this is the last time you get to put your foot down'.
