Jewish girls - if someone is getting called up for an Aaliyah (sp?)

Fh's cousin is getting amrried in september and this weekend they're going up for an aaliyah at saturday morning services and then there's going to be a brunch, etc. Is this a gift or card kind of occasion or no? I have no idea about this, and I don't want to do the wrong thing?

It is an honor, rather than a celebration. No need to send a card or give a gift. What you described is called an 'auf ruf'.

Stolen from a website...

' Auf-ruf is a Yiddish term, taken from German, which means 'to be called up.' Auf Ruf is generally an Ashkenazi or European custom in which a groom - or both the groom and bride in egalitarian congregations - is called up to the Torah (aliyah l'Torah) during a worship service when the Torah scroll is being read as an honor before the wedding. After the Torah reading, a blessing (berakha) known as a MiSheBerakh is recited in which members of the congregation ask for God's blessings for the bride and groom on their forthcoming marriage and life together as husband and wife. This auf-ruf generally occurs the Sabbath morning before the wedding or perhaps the week in advance.'

After the ceremony, the groom's family will typically sponsor the kiddush following Shabbat services or a brunch in your case here. After the blessings are given, they throw candy at the couple (kosher of course) to signify the sweetness of marriage. I hope FH and I don't get pelted in the eye the week before the wedding. Nothing says love more than a yarmulke and a matching eye patch.

Thanks so much. I know about the custom, but I've always seen it done AT an event, as in, the parents go up at the baby naming, or the week after the bar mitzvah when you would ahve already given a gift etc, so I'm already giving a gift. I figured it wasn't a gift thing, but I just wanted to check! Thanks so much!
