jewish wedding ketubah and breaking the glass

jewish wedding ketubah and breaking the glass

I went to a jewish wedding last night and learned interesting facts that I never knew. I thought some of you might be interested because we are signing a ketubah and breaking the glass and I didn't know what it meant until last night, I'm so ashamed.
First, the ketubah was for the bride! It was created to ensure that the woman would be taken care of. It is considered an ancient document that protected her rights that the groom has to sign. The ancient ketubah was a major step forward in women's rights. In a world in which women were often viewed as property, Judaism ensured that every bride was accorded dignity and security in the marriage.
Second, stepping on the glass symbolizes the destruction of the holy temple in Jerusalem. The breaking of the glass symbolizes the breaking of our hearts in remembrance.

DH is Jewish (I'm not) and during our research for our program, we also came across explanations that said that crushing the glass symbolizes the permanence of marriage and that each piece of broken glass means each year of happiness for the couple.

I'm so ashamed.

Why be ashamed? You learned something new!

As most of you know I'm in process of becoming Jewish. I love what breaking the glass symbolizes, and we picked a mezuzah that can hold the glass in it.

It was at a temple in melville, I forgot the name but I think it's pretty close to where you grew up, exit 50 on the LIE. The reception and the ceremony were there it was a gorgeous temple
