I need some opinions... I posted recently about my job situation, now on Tuesday, they finally gave me my raise. But I have a serious problem with it. After giving me a great review, and still saying great things about me, they had the nerve to only give me $0.50 per hour!!! I didn't say anything at the time, because I was just floored, and shocked that they would insult me like that! Shouldn't I have gotten at least $1.00 per hour? I've been here a year, and they didn't have a bad thing to say about me? I'm so confused? I wasn't going to say anything because I was just going to blow it off and try to find another job, but now, it's really bothering me. I feel so unappreciated. My question is, should I talk to my boss, or just leave it alone. I can't risk losing this job until I find another, but I can't stand being treated like this. What should I do??? HELP!!!

Re: Job situation...
I once got a crappy raise like that in the same circumstance and had the exact same reaction as you. I went and found another job with a better salary. They ended up countering and I got a decent raise but I was fully prepared to leave. I don't know what is standard in your company in terms of raises. As far as you know a 50 cent raise could be considered a good raise. Many people in my office with much longer service receive $20-40 raises - in NYC. I know you are in the Carolinas where salaries may be lower.
Since you are planning to leave anyway, I would probably let it go and just start looking for a new job sooner then later, but of course you need to make that decision.
I have no advice - but I can sympathize.

The same thing happened to me when I got my review. I got the Best review I could have gotten. Since I started right out of college I was underpaid to begin with, and now I am running a few departments here! (Start-up company BTW)SO after my review they offered me a little raise and asked if I was happy with that. I was planning on this happeneing so I was prepared. I said No I am not happy and here is why.... The response I got back is 'Well, you are a young girl... and this is a convient locatrion for you' I was pissed and they could tell! I said what does that have to do with my job performance! I was ready to quit... a few minutes later they called me back in and asked what I want, and they gave it to me. It was a 15% raise and I was very happy, but I am still pissed about the comments they made.
Anyway my point is be prepared to say WHY you deserve the raise. If they realize you are valuable and they want to keep you there I don't think .50 more is a lot to sacrifice.

yeah, money is always a funny situation. The best thing to do is to start looking if you are unhappy, without saying anything. Talking to your boss probably won't change your salary, and if anything, it will tell your boss that you are unhappy. Then, every 'sick day' you take or 'doctor's appointment' you have will be looked upon with suspicion, Then, if they need to make a cut somewhere, they'll try to find a way

Re: Job situation...
Melissa....I don't think 50 cents is that bad for the South, sad but true.
But you seem really unhappy there so I would start looking around. My mom has found some great jobs where she is making a dollar less then she made on LI in the same area as you.
Julz... God, I hate that a guy in my office used to always get larger raises then me (not by much but still enough) and their reasoning was because he was single and I was married and had my husband to take care of my bills...

Re: Job situation...
Thanks everyone...
I guess I won't say anything. With my luck I'll say the wrong thing and get fired. I'm just going to continue looking!
I know that they give more than .50 for a raise. Everyone else makes way more than me in salary alone, so that's why I don't understand why I got such a crappy raise. I think they want me to leave because I had originally asked for a raise and more responsibility, and they were suppose to give it to me. I don't think they want to pay more than what I'm making for this position, so I think they did that to make me want to quit, and then they can hire someone for the cheap salary they're offering.
I'm not doing brain surgery, I know my position isn't a top job, but I do sooo much here, and I just feel unappreciated. When they were interviewing for another position, I heard them tell the applicant that 'I help out here!' I couldn't believe it. They just don't feel that my job is important, I guess.
I don't mind trying to find another job, but it took me long enough to find this one. The job market is still bad. I don't know... I can't win!

What does your mom do?
I actually did find something for the same salary that I was making in NY when I first moved down. But that was in Charlotte. Ever since I relocated to the Raleigh area, I can't seem to find a good, steady, FT job! My husband has a much better job than he had in Charlotte, but not me. That's my luck!

Re: Job situation...
Julz - my job told me the same exact thing. I think they think I have it good because I'm not working in the city anymore, making the same money...and I am the youngest one here, yet they feel I'm one of their most valuable employees. They write off other people's billable time and they fluff mine up because I am really fast. Anyway, they brought me here (an old boss found me) and trained me on everything, so I am the only one here who didn't have the degree first. I'm finally finishing my B.S. this week actually, and come December I want a big increase. I just feel like they look at me as the young girl that makes a BIG profit for them. I know if I open my mouth, they will give me what I want, but they know I'm a wuss like that and I think they take advantage. With a wedding to pay for and a house in the future, I'm definitely opening my mouth this year. But I still don't know how...

If you plan on leaving I would wouldn't make a big stink. At least you can get a good recommendation if you need one for the new job. Good luck!

Well she was an officemanager/biller up at a Dentist Office in Massapequa. And now she works for a 2 office practice, she works 4 days in Cary and 1 day in Raleigh basically she is doing front office work. I helped her work on her cover letter and resume and then she drove around Morrisville and Cary and looked for practices that she liked and mailed them her info. She is making real good money, I'm jealous since she is almost doubling my Florida Salary, plus 401k, insurance and vacation. The South is wierd, they post jobs in the paper but then they always give them to someone internal or someone's family member and they just cover there A$$ by posting it. I've learned from living here that you need to sell youself either on paper or in person and just try to find a position rather then wait for them to advertise.
