So I have been a member of Lucile Roberts for some time... and my contract is over. So I was thinking of joining Bally's Fitness... it is a few min closer and I think they over more for the money! They are having a special $19 down and $19 a month... can't bet that! Anybody already a member? Opinions?

Re: Joining Bally's?
i was a member.. altho bally's is only a few minutes' walk from my apt i felt i had to get outta there. it's so over crowded.. once you get yoru machine there's a line of ppl waiting for you to get off.. the staff's rude and lazy... the machines are dirty from the lack of proper care...
i'm now a member at NYSC. i know.. i know. they cost a hell of a lot more in comparison to Bally's but they're better in retrospect.

Re: Joining Bally's?
I was at Bally's for 3 years (because I signed the contract) and I thought they were great. I always took the advanced step class and would leave the gym drenched. I think that 19 down/19 a month is great...but it has to be a contract...

I don't think it is fair to say that one gym chain is better than another. I think it depends on the particular Bally you go to. They are NOT all rude and lazy. I worked with people in one location who actually called me when they hadn't seen me in a few days They were worried that something had happened to me. Another time, a trainer actually looked up to see that I had been going to other locations. I call that caring!
The advantage to a large chain is that there are many locations to choose from if you aren't near the club you frequent the most. I work out in Kew Gardens, Little Neck, Westbury, Rockville Centre and on some occasions, Sheepshead Bay. I am always coming and going so my gym bag and IPOD are always in the trunk of my car. I get my work-outs in whenever I can.
I have been a member at Bally for years. I go religiously so it is worth every penny I've spent. I know many people get sucked into contracts that they hate but if you actually USE your membership, it works! People tend to hate their memberships when they aren't going to the gym anymore.

I love my Bally's membership, too bad I dont use it as much as i should. I would just check for restrictions for that membership b/c I know that some deals they offer are only for certain days of the week i.e. M, W, F or T, Th, Sat. SO you would not be able to go every day!

Re: Joining Bally's?
I belong to Bally's and Lucille Roberts. In my opinion I prefer Lucille Roberts (Massapequa). When I go to Bally's I have to get there 45min earlier (levittown) to get a spot in class. The classes are good but I think LR are better. If you are a weight person then Bally's is better as far as advanced equipment. I like the fact also that at LR you don't have alot of meatheads hanging out checking out chicks. Hey how YOOUU doing?

when i saw that amazing deal i hopped right on aboard! but as i exercised (sheepshead) i started noticing things. i'm not suggesting you join NYSC specifically. heck.. just check out other gyms if the cost permits. and it's great that they called you and made you feel good but that's the sorta view i got as well as many others. just google Bally's Total Fitness Complaints and you'll get an array of complaints (ie cleanliness, staff's professionalism, contract, population, etx) ... it's not a shocker.

Re: Joining Bally's?
I just joined and that 19 down thing is a bunch of crap- yes you have to sign a contract 3 yrs and there are only CERTAIN DAYS AND HOURS you can work out when you pay 19 down, but they dont tell you that on the commercial, but I joined anyhow but on a regular membership so I can go anytime/anyday. I go to the levittown one and yes it is VERY crowded in 3 weeks Ive yet to get on a treadmill- good thing I have a trainer or I would be waiting around FOREVER for machines too. I'll be honest if it wasnt for the wedding I would have joined lucille roberts but I needed the wieght training as well as cardio. It also depends on time of day unfortunately I can only go after work 5 pm like the rest of the world it seems so thats why I have to wait so long, this week I am going earlier just to see if there is a difference, oh and they are open late that was a HUGE plus for me. Just bring a towel b/c they dont have you or anyone go around and wipe down the sweat! to me thats a gross. when I belonged to golds they did that. oh and not at all at levittown the guido's- like someone had posted far from the truth, believe me when I tell you 98% of the clients are overweight- and no one is starring- I left golds gym for that reason.

Re: Joining Bally's?
I dunno, I go to 5 different Bally locations and I never wait. I sign up for cardio machines and work the rest of my work out around those sign up time. If I am to use a treadmill at 5:30 and it is 5:15, then I do crunches until it is my turn. You have to be flexible. As far as cleaning goes, there is an assumption or responsibility ont he part of gym members. Many gyms provide sprays and towels to wipe off machines for the MEMBERS to use. To expect someone else to stand there waiting for someone to finish sweating so they can clean up is just as gross and logistically impossible when you have upwards of 100 or so different machines in one location. People need to clean up after themselves. PERIOD.

Re: Joining Bally's?
I'm anti-Bally's....what I didn't understand is that you are buying a memebership at say $3000 (Idon't know what actually is) so right now I can't cancel my membership unless I want to completly pay off the membership.
If you do decide to go with them you can buy memeberships off of ebay (I wish I had known this earlier) and get them for much cheaper because people don't want the memebership anymore.

My location doesnt have a sign up for machines, you stand there and wait, you are allowed 30 minutes at busy times and if someone is waiting- they will boot you off- this is in levittown at least. And there are NO towels or wipes or cleaning agents to clean off machines.

I never said I expected someone to 'clean' up after someone, I am simply stating that there are NO sprays, wipes, towels of any kind that I have seen in other gyms. I am there everyday, have a trainer- asked him too about it- they dont offer it! To me that is gross- have you ever seen how some peolple sweat??????? , so BRING your OWN towel if you go to Ballys, thats all Im saying. and someone had asked for opinions on ballys and I think thats an important factor I wish I knew before hand but didnt think of it until after I commited myself to over 4000, membership. The people are nice def, but I think they lack in the hygiene department.

Dully noted. I bought my membership so many years ago that I can't even remember what I paid for it and I guess I have had relatively positive experiences. I always bring my own towels. I wear gloves on every machine, not just to protect my hands from callouses (which I have anyway), but because I dont like to touch anything that anyone else does. I assume that most people know what proper hygiene is when they clearly do not.
LOL I am one of those people who doubles and triples up on toilet seat covers and has anti-bacterial gel in her bag and on her desk at work. Oh and baby wipes too. Crazy? Obsessive? Maybe, but I work with kids who lack hygiene skills and I can't afford to get sick. It took me one month to teach them how to sneeze into their elbows instead of their hands so they don't spread germs on doorknobs.
