Joint Finances

Re: Joint Finances

I make more than my FH... and from the day we moved in together, he's given me his paycheck (no I didn't force him either) and I've taken care of the $$$... he takes his 'fun' money we've budgeted and I get the rest for bills... He's aware of what comes in and goes out... and how and who to pay - just in case I can't do it...

for a while he was making more. now I'll be making more, and in a year he'll be making me. We share everything. If I need somethuing or something needs to be paid, there are no questions asked.

We make the same amount when he works his norm job and bounces.

We have a weekly allowance and put the rest in the joint account...

I make a considerable amount more than DH. He hands over his checks and I take care of ALL the money and bills. Don't get me wrong I totally trust DH it's just that I want to know where all the money is and where it is going at all times. He has his own savings account and each pay check a certain amount goes in that account for him but the rest goes to either our joined checking or savings.

Re: Joint Finances

we make just about the same (although i have MUCH more savings than he does) we keep separate accounts and putan equal amount of money into a joint account for bills and stuff

I make more than FH right now. Hopefully he gets his promotion soon and then we will be making about the same.. As for finances I am going to be the one taking care of everything since he has no clue how to do that. His mother always took control of his bills so hes clueless. GGrr i hate that she did that to him. He would never make it by himself..

OMG I don't even want to THINK about that! He makes more but I have much more in equity. I own half of a house and have a bunch of stock portfolios. My brother in law and I both agree I should get a prenup.

Now that's gonna be a fun conversation!

Re: Joint Finances

We make around the same amount.
We each have our own savings and checking accounts from before we were married, and a joint savings account which we just opened together recently.
He's much better at handling the bills than I am, so he usually pays them for us (otherwise they'd get lost & never get paid on time). The only bill I really take care of is my own credit card bill.
Even though we use our separate accounts, we consider it all 'our' money and we don't keep track of whose money is used for what... it's kind of random. Like when we go out I usually pay for stuff because I tend to carry around more cash than he does, but he carries around his checkbook so if we need to write a check he usually takes care of it.

Re: Joint Finances

I make more, but that's not really fair to say since we both earn high salaries. However, at the same time, he had significantly higher savings than I did because he had been working a lot longer.

We have absolutely everything joint , including the money we had before we were married (well, except our 401(k)s, lol, because that would be impossible). It doesn't matter to me at all who makes more money. It's been OUR money since before we were married and it will always all be OUR money no matter who makes more. This is what works for us, and this is the only way I'd ever handle our finances.

How you handle your finances is a personal decision between you and your DH, and it shouldn't matter who makes more. (Would you feel differently about it if he made more than you? If so, you may need to rethink how you're looking at this.)

Re: Joint Finances

Generally I make more, but my income depends on the real estate market, so that can change on a dime. He gives me half his paycheck to put in the wedding expenses account. I pay the bills, all of which are in my name. I'm ok with that since, like I said, I'm the one paying them.

A bank somehow 'erased' one of his accounts years ago, and he refused to trust them ever since, so when we got engaged I opened an account for wedding finances. He had no bank/credit history, which ******.

Then, we applied for passports. They sent him a request for futher ID, and the list of acceptable ID included things like bank statements. It kind of made him realize that not having a paper trail or financial identity is a much bigger deal than just whether you get loans/credit cards. We put him on the account, and he handed me his debit card immediately. I'm kind of baby-stepping him into adult finance.

Wow. I feel lucky. We both have the same financial goals and are both very responsible with our money. This is one reason having all our finances joint really works well for us.

Re: Joint Finances

right now I make more than FH. But he is job searching now too so he may end up making more than me (hopefully)! Right now I handle most of our bills except for his cell and stuff similar to that. But Im gonna hand a more equal amount of that over to him once we are married.

I feel like every couple I know starts out with the girl making more money in the beginning! Haha dunno why!

Re: Joint Finances

We make around the same amount - he makes a little more with bonus.

We started a joint savings together 3 years ago when we moved into our apartment, and merged all of our accounts last year when we bought a house. I handle all of the finances, but mostly because I'm an auditor and have been dealing with finances ever since I started working. He actually has no idea what is in our accounts, or what our credit card bills are every month. We talk about any large purchases (usually a couple hundred or up) in advance, but for the most part there's no questions asked.

The funny thing is that I was the big spender and he was concerned about merging accounts. Now I'm the one monitoring our spending habits! He's going to Foxwoods this weekend and I actually told him we have to discuss his limits on gambling! I never thought I'd utter those words!

Re: Joint Finances

i make more than FH, but because we both work for the gov't, we both get raises every year, just at different times, so in about 5-10 years, we'll be making pretty much the same $. for now, we are just calling everything 'ours' and putting the $ into a joint checking and joint savings, and all of our bills get paid with that. for us, it's easier, because we don't make any real big purchases for ourselves, especially since we are saving for the wedding. after the wedding i am sure we will give ourselves some kind of allowance for food, clothes, best buy etc., but for now, this works for us.

Re: Joint Finances

We make within a few thousand dollars of each other (actually I can't remember who makes more right now, it bounces back and forth)

We have our checks directly deposited into the same account and our credit union automatically spreads it out between bills, savings, spending $ and retirement.

He balances our statements monthly because I HATE that job.

Re: Joint Finances

I make a considerable amount more than FH does. He also has some debt to clear that I do not as well as about 3x the amount of student loans that I have. we are living in an apartment until closer to the wedding and then will begin house hunting. At the moment, I do pay more rent etc. We have broken it down in percentages against our salary to try and make things fair and to afford him the oppertunity to pay off his debt.

after the wedding, we will join checking but each keep seperate savings. we will each keep a percentage in our personal savings and the rest will go into checking for the bills, house etc.!
