I was on Jury Duty yesterday. Well it was actually Jury selection. My name was never called but I still had to sit there all day while they interviewed other potential jurors (I'm on call for another week). Let me tell you this, God help us if we ever have to stand trial, some of these people were SO stupid!! I wouldn't want them deciding my fate!

Re: Jury Duty....
I was in jury selection two summers ago - i totally totally agree - turns out the jury I was placed on had very knowlegable but i think that was because it was a sexual battery case against a doctor -
Otherwise I advise everyone NOT to get sued where a jury trial is going to happen

It is pretty sad.
I was on a panel in the QUEENS county courthouse. The judge makes all his statements and asks everyone if they in fact live in queens. Wouldn't you know the fifth person they interview lives in brooklyn and got excused. The dope spent almost a whole day at jury duty for nothing

Re: Jury Duty....
I have been on a jury twice. once as an alternate joror and another a juror. I remember the first time I went, I was shocked at the way people dressed to court. They looked like they had just rolled out of bed and remembered they had to go to court. Some could not even speak english.
The first one me and this Detective who was an alternate juror would have pleaded with the plaintiff and we were shocked that the jurors came back in less than 10 minutes with a not guilty plea.
Then the other case settled after we sat there for the entire day. It seemed like a really good case too!!!!
I really enjoy jury duty.

My Dh went a month ago! It was awful, he said! this whole system stinks, I tell you! they pick up some half witted non-English speaking idiots and they are deciding is someone is going to get locked up for 25 years or go free??? How scary is that?

I cant stand jury duty. I have gone a few times so far...Last time I read around 300 pages of a book...Got called around 4:15 and was told we can go home, and we are done serving.
I was on a jury a few years back for a car accident. It was pretty interesting.

Re: Jury Duty....
I wouldn't mind jury duty too much except my company doesn't pay us for the time off, just the $40 a day or what ever's the minimum. If I got stuck on a long case, I would have some serious problems.
My father was once on a case for 7 weeks Imagine 2 months with no salary? (Atleast he was paid for it and he loved jury duty)

Re: Jury Duty....
I did jury duty a few months ago and it was the worst. The only way to get off was to say that you didn't speak English. As annoying as it was, it was a nice break from work
ChristineC68 - I can't believe your company doesn't pay you - Most people get the salary but the company gets the $40.

Re: Jury Duty....
I always yell at my best friend when it comes to jury duty! She ALWAYS finds a way out of it because she says she loses too much money by spending the 3 days in court.
Last time I told her that when she wonders why she loses her own personal lawsuit, just realize its because a majority of intelligent, educated people like her always find a way around jury duty and the jury of her *peers* aren't really qualified to decide a case.

I love jury duty! when I did it I found it so interesting- but maybe the jury would be better if people didn't get out of it all the time-

Re: Jury Duty....
My first time called to Jury Duty was in Queens.. I went and in less than 2 hours I was chosen for a jury. Weird. Never expected them to choose me because it was two months after 9/11 and it had to do with a tramatic experience, which I had to say I had gone through.. and im in insurance.. why choose me? Even stranger we had a girl who worked at St. John's law school as a juror and an ex cop as an alternate.
It was a criminal case.. nasty.. Mean bugger.
We were in court 4 days a week for 2 and a half weeks and in deliberations for a day and a half.
It was interesting. I dont mind the system.. it works. Do wish some companies would be more supportive.
I ALWAYS travel with my 'bag' which has a makeshift pillow, water, crackers, music, books, nail file, clippers, phone and some sort of game. I hate just 'sitting'.

you are not allowed to bring in nail files, knitting needles or cell phones into Jury Duty any more!! 9/11 really changed the whole world!!!

Re: Jury Duty....
The added bonus to sitting on my a$$ all day listening to other people sound like idots was I bought a Coach knock-off in the lobby of the courthouse. How funny is that?

NO Cellphones? What do they do if you get there with a cellphone? Can you atleast have it off?

Re: Jury Duty....
Obviously you have to go through security like in an airport. If you bring in a cell you have to check it in at security and you can pick it up when you leave.
They were making men remove their belts and made me lift up my pany legs to check-out my boots. Very thorough and kind of scarey.

Re: Jury Duty....
That sucks!! I usually can't live without my cellphone...lol.
I was on a jury once...I hated it, b/c of the other jury members...I was young (22) and I felt I wasn't listened too at all...so my chance to shape the US legal system was twarted...
DH's friend's father was on one of John Gotti's trials...and the police had to bring him to school everyday!!

Re: Jury Duty....
you have to turn off your cell phone and are not allowed to use it (Suffolk County Courts)
When we went to the Brooklyn Court house...we had to 'check-in' our cell phones and cameras (I had a camera because DH was going through his citizen ship ceremony)
