Have you ever been called for 'grand jury' duty? It says on the form I got that I would have to serve for 4 weeks or more? I guess this is for crimal suits! I dont want to serve for that long, I cant be away from my job that long. Has anyone done this?
***Ladies I am torn, I dont know if I should go, and hope I dont get chosen, or if I should postpone and hope to not get chosen at a later date... It is such a stressful issue since I dont have tenure. What do you think I should do?

Re: Jury Duty
FH has been called for Grand Duty jury twice, even though you have to report, you can be excused once you go there...he claimed he would suffer hardship( his job does not pay him for the days on Jury duty) and he was excused...( this was on his second call) ON the first one he called and got it postponed, but a postponement is only for 6-12 months and they will...see above...call you for it again in that time frame...You also may be excused if they just aren't the juror you are looking for....so you may not have to do it , it's just different then regular jury duty where to call in to see if your number is called...... p.s. A girl at my job had to serve recently and she was there 6 1/2 weeks....wow! You have to prove that your job performance will suffer or money wise you will suffer ( at my job they pay us full salary and you get the jury duty money so there is no way out...if your job does not pay you, you have to show your montly bills as proof of hardship) Hope that helps some... let us know what happens

Re: Jury Duty
Try claiming hardship and ask if you can be transferred to petty jury - I had that problem a while ago - i told them i was in school and had to postpone - the guy was really cool and asked me if i wanted to be transferred to petty jury - i ended up only serving for 3 days -

Re: Jury Duty
I just got a jury summons for Federal court in Brooklyn - not happy about that. I've got about 2 1/2 months left to plan my wedding - I don't have time for this!
Someone I work with had to serve grand jury - he was there one month. Grand jury is to determine whether or not the person should be indicted.

Re: Jury Duty
Sorry!! I got a jusry summons the week before my wedding saying I had to report while I was on my honeymoon. Needless to say I postponed it and will dreadfully have to do it this summer. There is a section in LI Life in Newsday about jury duty. There are some good hints on how to get out of it!!

Grand jury duty is different, you HAVE to go, no calling in..and they decide once you are there

Re: Jury Duty
Nope...I've never been called for grand jury duty. I recently finished jury duty in queens. I was on an a trial. I found it really interesting. Call me crazy, but I would LOVE to be on a grand jury...I find these things interesting. Maybe I went into the wrong field

Re: Jury Duty
My concern is that I am a teacher, and even though I will be paid, I cant be away from my class for that long. I am freaking out about this. Even if I postpone it, they will probably call again during the school year. HELP!!!!!!!

Re: Jury Duty
My mom got called for grand jury. She told the judge. She wouldn't be able to judge fairly in the case and they excused her.

Re: Jury Duty
I was also been called for Federal Grand Jury in B'klyn .I did everything I could possibly think of to get out of ,and they could care less when its Federal Grand Jury .I went as far as telling them I refuse to take the oath and the woman was like 'thats nice now go sit back down , your staying' It lasted for about a year and a half of every monday having to go in.(we did have it cancelled a ton of times ) Then they finally dissmissed the case.

Re: Jury Duty
Christy-- is this for Nassau County??????
I served for Grand Jury in the spring of 2002. I served Monday through Thrusday for 5 weeks. I was first called in Sept 2001 and I got it posponed. They then called me in the spring of '02. THey will just keep calling you until you can serve. IN NASSAU COUNTY THEY WILL NOT LET YOU OFF THE HOOK!!!! If you are a teacher or a student they will make you serve in the SUMMER! THey flat out told everyone that. The woman that runs Grand Jury in Nassau is like a Judge Judy wanna-be hard a$$ and didn't take excuses from anyone. I mean, she was BRUTAL.
They don't send you through questioning. You are just placed in a group of 27-30 people. It wasn't that bad though. I was the fore-person and I really enjoyed it. I was very involved in the cases, swearing people in... and it helped pass the time. (I even got an officail certificate saying I was foreperson! LOL) Most of the time we got out around 3PM which was a joy for me. Plus, sometimes the cases are a bit slow, and you won't have to show up on somedays. Also, if you are in a total bind you are allowed to miss a few days. You just have to bring in a note. I missed 2 days and it wasn't a big deal. And since I served this I am off the hook for ALL jury duty for 15 years! FM me if you have any other questions.

Re: Jury Duty
It is for suffolk (riverhead). I can postpone one time, but I am wondering if I am better off just going. I am just stressed because I dont have tenure yet, and do not want to be away from my class.
