jury duty questions

jury duty questions

I'm still debating if it would be worth it to show my registration that i'm still in school and get a postponement or to just chance it and hope to get dismissed and not have to serve for another 6 years.

I heard at first that school is considered as a valid excuse anymore but then found out from someone i used to work with who still works in deans office that school is a valid excuse thatthey still write letters for students.

Anyone ever be able to get dismissed from jury duty for still being in school and for how long were you able to? was it just 6 months or until graduation?

I got excused because of school about 2 years ago and haven't heard anything from them since (i've since graduated). But my roomie had to go, they told her school wasn't a valid excuse, but she ended up getting dismissed.

So I don't think that there is anything set. I think it's up to you if you want to try and chance it and hope to get dismissed or if you want to say screw it and just hope your name doesn't come up again for a long time.

Good luck!

It can't hurt to show that you are a student, I would do anything to get out of it! Of course there are other ways to get out of it, if you can be really emotional that day, saying that you're stressed about your wedding that might get them to dismiss you.

i used school as my excuse back in 2002 and i haven't been bothered yet. they ask you when you are expected to graduate..

I don't think school works the way it used to. They sent me the questionnaire a while ago then in January the sent me to notice to show up. On it it said I couldn't really use school as an excuse as the made sure it was during the break but school would be back in about a week. So there was a 1 time postponement thing for up to 6 months. There was a number or something you call to do it. I did it and gave them a date within 6 months to serve and now they sent me another notice to show up on that date. Chances are I won't get picked to serve (I graduated from law school in May and I'm taking the bar this week)!!

I got called when i was 19 to go to jury duty (im now 23) and they excused it although they called me again when i was 20 during the summer and i showed up and got selected to be in the jury but they settled right before we were supposed to go to court.....

Everything has changed now and you can't use any excuse.

But, I just got over serving about 6-months ago and what they do is as soon as you get there they announce if anyone is a full time student, care takes of a child or business owner to go upfront and I think you get excused then.

Either way you have to show up.

I wasnt excused for being in school. .. they told me I could postpone it for whenever I want - and that school is not 52 weeks long. They told me to schedule it in the summer. .. I tried to get away with it, bc I told them that i was taking summer classes, and they sd even summer classes have a 1-2 week gap. So I just rescheduled mine for the summer.

This happened abt 4 yrs ago.

Re: jury duty questions

so i'm back i went down there and they did say if yoiu're a college student partime or fulltime you could be excused and i had to wait for my row to be called up waited awhile for that since i was sitting in the back.

unfortunately i dont know if its because the margins werent set right or what but my name didnt print out on it so the guy told me to print out another copy and mail ti with my summons to the address listed at the top of it and attach a note. he confirmed this with the other lady as well.

i felt so nauseus this morning so i was glad to get out of there, but now i'm just worried about mailing it in after the date on it. i hope this doesnt cause a problem.

I used the school excuse too, however they bothered me one more time when I was in grad school and again in October this year when I just started teaching.. I was able to postpone it for 6 months and then I got called this June for Grand jury... But was not selected, so I am good for 5 years (I think).

I mailed them a letter like three years ago telling them I was a student graduating in 2005 and sent them my schedule or registration or some proof. Haven't heard anything either.

You're eligible for dismissal as long as you are enrolled in classes. My only thought (and i'm not sure when you graduate) but if you postpone it once, you have to attend the next time, which may be closer to your wedding... which would obviously be extremely inconvenient. Personally, I did Grand Jury duty last February (it's a month long) and it was W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L!!! But i'm also a pre-law major and loved the experience. The rest of the people thought it was weird!!
