Just came back from a wake

It was my friends grandfather..
My friends grandparents had been married for 52 years.
I was sitting talking with her and she asks me about how married life is.

I said pretty good so far...

She proceeded to say...if ya get through the first year it is going to last...the first year is the hardest.

And although i know there are plenty of marriages that break up after a year...I still found her saying this to be so wise ....

I'm sorry to hear about her grandfather.

but i found her words to be sooo eye opening..

that the first year is the hardest! So for all that may not have that 'perfect' relationship that you always thought it would be

well we're going on 2 years, so we must be doing something right!!

but she doesn't know it. A week ago the doctors told my friends mother (grandmothers daughter) that her liver cancer has come back

i hate saying it but we didn't think she would last without him

How sad, let's hope she makes it.

I am sorry about your friend's Grandfather. It will be so hard on her grandmother. I am sorry that they were hit with a double dose of bad news

I am so sorry to hear this! My thoughts and prayers are with the family!

Sorry to hear this. But also inspired to hear of a couple married for 52 years.

I know that couples do split up after surviving the first year, but I agree that the first year is the hardest. If you get through it and are optimistic, you will last. If you stumble through it and don't try to work out the differences, but just coast along, you might not make it.

I want to be married for over 50 years.
